does anyone know if there is a census after the one for 1901 im finding it hard to trace people after this date.
Yes there is a Census for 1911, but will not be seen until 2011 !! From what i've heard its not going to be very complete either ?
Anyone else in the know , who could elaborate ?
Hal.
I've read somewhere that the condition of the 1911 originals is so bad that it wasn't certain that they would be released. Apparently, a large part has rotten away through poor storage of the returns.
The only way in which you can go forward in time, i.e. from 1901 to 2005, is to scroll through the indexes either at the Family Records office or at the county libraries. If you can't get into London to visit the FRO, try finding out where your local county library is. They won't have the journals which the FRO have, but microfiche records - which are really dead easy to use.
I hope that helps
Here is a link to the truth regarding the 1911 census from someone who knows!
Is it not also the case that the 1931 census was destroyed during the Second World War?
Yes and no census was taken in 1941.
Are you sure about 1941? I was all ways under the impression that the 1941 Census was cancelled and that you have a jump from 1931 to 1951.
That's what I said, no census was taken in 1941! You have a jump from 1921 to 1951. Ouch!
Was the 1931 census destroyed deliberately or was it done accidently during the bombing?
Blame Hitler.

Isobel I realise I mis read your post as it was late. Maybe that's why they switch off the reply buttons
The comments concerning the Census made here probably only apply to the census of England and Wales. The Census returns in Northern Ireland (from 1931) and Scotland are overseen by the distinct General Register Office for Northern Ireland and the General Register Office for Scotland. Having added up the figures they send them down to London.
I am not aware of the General Register Office for Scotland having problems with its returns rotting or being destroyed thus far.
Adam, you are probably right! The GROS specifically gives a date for the availability of the 1911 census for Scotland and under the freedom of information details mentions the 1921 and 1931 census. However in line with the rest of the UK, no census was taken in Scotland in 1941 because of WW2!
The census details for Northern Ireland for 1911 are held by the national record office in Dublin. Not sure what their policy is with regard to the release of such records. Presumably the 1921 census is held there too. Is there an Irish specialist in the house? For 1931 onwards NI is part of the UK and so presumably no census was taken in NI in 1941 either.
It would be interesting to know.
But yes Adam, you are correct in that my original post regarding the smell and state of the 1911 census did relate to England and Wales. Apologies for not making this clear.
The Scottish returns have always been good and clear. As far as I know the Scottish census of 1931 is good.
Sometime before the publication of the 1881 census I wrote to the PRO for information from that census. I seem to remember that they would only give information on a named family at a specified address - eg. the Gladstones at 10 Downing Street. In my case the address was incorrect, so I learned nothing, but is this sort of service still available? It might occasionally resolve a problem.
