Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for Devon. I am trying to trace my G G G grandmother who was Mrs Gorringe. Husband was Edward. Children George, Edward, Sarah and Jane. I cannot trace what happened to her as I don't know her first name. Two of her children where in the workhouse in 1861 and Edward Snr died in 1857. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance
Jo
I checked the 1851 on Ancestry (which is not complete but I've found loads of my Devon ancestors there.) The only Gorringes are in Lewes, Sussex - a Susan, 2 called Henry and 3 called Mary.
What age do you expect them to be at this time, and where were they born?
Hi there, Thanks for your response
The eldest child Sarah was b abt 1841, Edward abt 1845,George abt 1843 and Jane abt 1848. They were all born in Lydd Kent.
Joan
If they were all born in Kent, and (I see from your other messages) died or ended up in the workhouse in Kent, why do you expect to find them in Devon?
Have you found this marriage on FreeBMD?
Marriages Jun 1841
FERRIS Stephen Romney Marsh 5 481
GORRINGE Edward Romney Marsh 5 481
JACKSON Mary Romney Marsh 5 481
MARSH Richard Romney Marsh 5 481
Milgate Mary Ann Romney Marsh 5 481
POPE James Romney Marsh 5 481
RAMSDEN Louisa Romney Marsh 5 481
No way of telling which bride married which groom except by getting the certificate. Romney Marsh registration district covered Lydd.
Hi Jo
I have checked the 1851 tri-county disc and cannot find this family in Devon.
To find your g g g grandmothers first and maiden names your best bet would be her marriage cert and/or birth cert of one of her children.
A marriage certificate would also give you her fathers name and occupation ( if before 1833 )
Oh my - doing so many links to my tree. Devon was another one. Confused or what. Thanks for your help. All is clearer now. Sorry for the mistake.
Jo
I have sent for my G G Grandfathers birth certificate (Dec 1843) and am hoping it will have her christian name on.
Thanks for the info on the marriages. I found the above birth on free BMD. Keep forgetting to look for marriages.
Thanks again
Jo
