I work for a community centre in west yorkshire and we are interested in setting up a group for centre users to research there family history. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get started?
Hi,
Can I suggest that you take a look at the Federation for Family History Societies (FFHS) website. This lists a number of Family history societies in the West Riding, including Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Doncaster, Huddersfield, Keighley, Pontefract, Sheffield, Selby, Wakefield and Wharfdale (to name but a few). The list provides contact names and numbers. These are established organisations, who not only have a wealth of local knowledge and the systems/records/ microfiches which you will need but will also be very willing to help you.
My recommendation would be to try not to re-invent the wheel but to work with the resources which are currently available to you and which are nearby.
I hope that helps
Thats really helpful thanks alot
That's OK. Give them a call, explain what your are trying to do and see if you can find a way of helping/working with each other. Good luck
