My gt-gt-grandfather was a retired Police Sergeant when he died, aged about 42, in November 1864. He died at his home in Fulham, London, but try as I might, I just cannot find out where he was buried. I've tried all the local burial grounds and cemeteries that were in use when he died, and have even tried Brookwood, but I can find no record of his burial anywhere. I'm told that he is not mentioned in the National Burial Index either!

Police pension archives are of no help, as they don't have records of burials.

I assume my ancestor would have been buried? Or is there any reason to think that he might not have been? The family were poor, and his widow (who died many years later) was buried in a Public grave.

Please could someone tell me where I go from here?

    Many thanks.

When you say local, how local? I ask because by this time Londoners were being buried out in the suburbs at places like Kensal Green, Hanwell and the like. LMA would probably be able to help.

Have you looked in the local newspapers for a notice of death or memorial service?.

I made a list of all burial grounds and cemeteries which were in, or within reach of Fulham. I then discounted all the ones which either hadn't opened in 1864, or had closed before that date. It left just a handful of possibilities, but Joseph wasn't listed in any of them.

The fact that he doesn't appear in the National Burial Index, is also somewhat worrying!

I've been told that sometimes, if people were very poor, their bodies could have been donated to the medical profession, instead of being buried, but I assumed that this referred mainly to homeless people, or those from the workhouse, neither of which describes my gt-gt-grandfather.

I haven't been able to trace any newspaper obituaries from 1864, but I think the family may have been too poor to place a notice in the newspaper. However, I'll certainly keep trying that route.

    Many thanks.

Not appearing in the NBI is nothing to worry about! There are only 13 million entries for a period covering from 1538 - a mere drop in the ocean. You should bear in mind too that Middx and the City of London are very poorly covered.

Have you had a look at this site? It might be of interest:

    I also mentioned the LMA:

They do have a burial index online although it is tedious in the extreme to use because you have to search whole documents. However if you persevere, you never know!

    Good luck.

Greybonce, you might want to try,

    www.cydislist.com/england.htm

scroll down until you see obituaries, etc... on the list.

Greybonce, on my above post to you, the spelling is wrong on the website I gave you. It should read,

    www.cyndislist.com/england.htm

just in case you wanted to use it, I wanted to correct my error.

    good luck to you.
