Was she Dorothy or Jane?

  I am researching Jane Tooth who I have a birth cert for and was born in Stafford in 1897. On the 1901 census she was down as being called Dorothy.I also have a marriage cert for her marrying a Herbert Stanley Sharp in 1919. After this she started to use the name Joan Simpkin nee Purcell. She lived with John Simpkin who was from Harrogate but he was called Percy at birth they never married. Can anyone help with any of these names I would be extremley gratful?

  I have a relative who was christened Nelly Doris. This name is also on her birth certificate. However for the whole of her life, and shown on her marriage certificate, she was known as Kay. Prehaps as with the shift from Jane to Dorothy, there was a change of heart at home and an alternative name was taken up.
  Thereafter, you would expect to see Dorothy Sharp. The jump to Joan Purcell/Simpkin seems to require further examination. Do you have any documenary evidence to support this. If not I would recommend that you double check your paperwork trail and question whether there are other possibilities.

  I do have paper work for the Joan Purcell name. We know that Percy/John Simpkin married Joan Purcell in 1921 but were seperated by 1923. As i cannot find any information on Joan I am at a loss. We then think Dorothy and John ran away together and Dorothy started to use the exwifes name. This name is used on my father in laws birth certificate and we know that this person was definately his mother what ever name she used.
