Whilst try to trace some of the Roberts family in Middlesex we have found the name Mary Fapence bn 1816, married to Thomas Fapence bn 1807. It looks as if she is the aunt of Mary Roberts aged 26 bn Hamptonwick. Mary Fapence could possibly be the sister of Joseph Roberts, how would I find the marriage details for her, I have tried freebmd, no luck.Only the 1881c seems to show them living in Chertsey. I don't have access to the 1841/51 census (even if I did I am not sure that area is available yet). Any suggestions !!!

    Hi keylady,

Are you sure of the spelling? As you say whilst you found them on the 1881 census there no trace of them elsewhere. I have checked 1861 to 1891 census with no success. I also checked for a marriage again with no success.

The reason why I question the spelling because elsewhere on the census for example the first letter of the name Thompson it is written exactly the same as the first letter of your Fapence. Also when enlarged the appears to be a letter possibly a C between the A and the P.

Sorry to answer your question with a question.
Regards
Spike
<QUOTE' USER='keylady' USERID='2023605'>Whilst try to trace some of the Roberts family in Middlesex we have found the name Mary Fapence bn 1816, married to Thomas Fapence bn 1807. Fapence is a mistranscription of Fagence. The 1871 census has them under the name 'Fayenee'! Thomas died 1890 in Chertsey. 1891 Census shows Mary Anne Fagence, widow, in Chertsey with her niece Mary Roberts, aged 35. Both born in Teddington. Perhaps you could investigate marriages at that register office. A Mary Ann Fagence died in Chertsey 1895, aged 80.
