On a marriage certificate, I have the following as an occupation: 'Higher' at least that what it looks like. I have come across the same word in a census return, although not for the same person.
In both instances, the other occupation has been agriculural labourer.

Just a thought, could it be a misspelling of hirer ie. someone who hires people for an employer.
