Hi, I've just managed to locate my great grandparents grave and found there were four adults and four infants in the plot, could anyone tell me was it normal to put this many in a grave?, I have visions of someone having to dig 14 foot deep to put the first one in, best wishes, Jean

Absolutely normal. I've found one, on the Isle of Sheppey with 14 named indivuduals spanning 3 generations. I'm not sure of the reason why whether this be because space in churchyards is always of a premium with an increasing population, expense, potential grave robbers.

I've just been on holiday in the south of France -in Gaillac - where the church yards are extremely small and which look rather peculiar with their churchyards stacked with colossal tombstones, which on closer inspection, revealed that they were family tombstones, containing the remaining of tens of family members stretching back, in one case to the 1840s.

Hi Loftyowl, Hope you had a good holiday and thanks for your reply. The reason I posted this message was because a few of us had got together discussing the find, but none of us could answer how they fit them all in, the cemetary is Weaste in Salford, Lancs and it is 39 acres with over 332,000 interments, so as you can imagine there's not much room between plots, did they really dig that far down to place the first coffin?, best wishes, Jean

    The mind boggles doesn't it.
One of the plots i found for one of my relatives had 8 people in !! Its difficult to take it on board. They wouldn't know at the time of the first burial that there would be other bodies going in ?
    Hal.

    Hi,
I don't wish to sound like a rain jacket but there are very good reasons for digging dig: These are to do with the quality of the soil; drainage, which can affect floatation and at times of drought lead to soil breaking and exposing coffins; to the qulaity of the material from which the coffin is made; and of course space.
Some of the 'multi' tombstone sites may be a mixture of coffins and cremations. Certainly, those which I saw in France were all cremations and it may be that the one which you have looked at is alao a mixture.
(I'm not really a rain jacket)

Thanks for your replies, does anyone know when cremations started?, I know there is not a crematorium at this grave yard, but there is at Agecroft, which is another very large graveyard in Salford, which is still used, would they have taken the ashes from one place to another for burial?, I can't believe I've got all these questions about graves. I am going to order a check on the grave, hopefully it will tell me the actual plot size and if there is anyone else in there I have not come across before, you never know, I didn't know about the three babies in there until I found this Tombstone inscription, it was very informative, best wishes, Jean

Cremations started in the late 19th century I believe, but there was religious objections for some years. I know that today the plots have a specified number of people to be buried there.
