How can I find out why nearly all my ancestors brothers children nearly all died as children in Autumn 1877. Is there a historical website I can look at?
Thanks
Jo
Smallpox. There was an epidemic in 1877. Whenever I come across clusters like this, I usually find the answer by googling the word epidemic and the year I am looking at.
Another way would be to buy all those death certificates! Ouch!
Many thanks. I tried googling Disease 1877 but to no avail. Thanks again
Jo
Childhood diseases were common and which today would be treatable and hospitals were not used as today. It may be that a local outbreak occurred and that information is in the local record office or newpapers. If you typed the year and place into a search engine then that may show a reason. Often statistics of deaths and causes were recorded by the Board of Health and those records (if they survive) should be at The National Archives, Kew.
Though this family were born and raised in Stallingborough in the mid 19th Century, at least one of the family was born in Deptford. Not the father of the deceased children but one of his brothers and some nephews. Deptford, I have discovered was one of the places plagued with small pox in 1877. I assume it was carried via a family visit or like. I will have to check and see if any of the other Neices and nephews also perished.
Thanks for your help
Jo
