I am trying to track down my Ancestors named Dales. My g g g Grandfather Marshall Dales, I think died in the 1850's - 2 possibles. By the 1861 census all their male off spring were in service, even 13 year old William. Though there was an Enoch aged 5 on the 1851 census, he seems to have disappeared without trace. I am trying to find what happened to Marshall's wife Elizabeth after 1851. They had a daughter Ellen b abt 1848 but no other daughter born before 1851 according to the 1851 census but the only Elizabeth I can find has magically acquired a daughter the same age as Enoch on the 1861 census. Things are further compounded by her being 25 on the 1841 census and aging 15 years by the 1851 census. Any ideas please?

    Thanks

    Jo

In the 1841 census ages of adults (over 15) were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so she could actually have been 29 in 1841 and still been recorded as 25. The age given in 1851 is likely to be nearer the mark.
