I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN TOLD BY MY UNCLE THAT MY GRANDFATHER WAS A GUARD AT A POW CAMP, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T FIND OUT WHERE THIS COULD OF BEEN.
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP IT WOULD REALLY HELP ME !!!!!
Please don't shout! (Turn your caps lock off.)
It would help us all to know a bit more about your grandfather first. Which war are you talking about? Have you any idea which campaigns he fought in? Was your grandfather British, Italian, German or some other nationality? Was he guarding Italians in Britain (there were POW camps in Britain), Germans in Italy or Britons in Germany? There are a lot of angles that need to be covered here, and we're not mindreaders.
There was certainly an Italian POW camp on the Isle of Man and some prisoners in Orkney who decorate a chapel there. If you try The National Archives, Kew, that might be a good start.
My apologies mate I forgot the caps lock was on!!
in reply to your reply my grandfather was in world war 2 and he was guarding pow's somewhere in this country
thanks for the help
This site has a list of all the POW camps in Britain. Unfortunately it doesn't say what nationality was in each one, and it changed over time anyway, but it may help you to narrow it down. Good luck!
There was an POW camp holding Italian soldiers between Malton and Pickering North Yorkshire It is now being run as a Museum It is known as Eden Camp and Im sure it will have a website or details could be found on a North Yorkshire Tourist site. Hope htis helps.
