Hello, I'm new to this website.
My Great Grandmother was Mary Ann Lush who was born in Portsea about 1886 (I think!). My problem is that, although I have her marriage cert. and her death cert, I am unable to find her birth cert. under that name.(I have searched six years of records on 1837.com and have also searched at the local record office) I have a reference to her baptism in Dec 1867.
I did think of illegitimacy, but her parents were married in 1864 and had no other children.
I suppose she might have been adopted. Does anyone know if it is possible to find adoption records?
Why do you say the parents had no other children? This looks like them in 1871, at 65 & 67 Abercrombie Street, Portsmouth. Charles is a master cooper and beer retailer, employing 3 men and a boy.

There are no adoption records at that date - adoption was informal until regulated in the 1920s.
I would suggest the first port of call would be for the baptism entry. Portsmouth (including Portsea) has a number of parishes and the Portsmouth Record Office may have the information. There is a possibility that she could have been born abroad if her father was in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines (including the Royal Marine Artillery) all of which have had bases around Portsmouth.
Adoption records are likely to have been recorded in the Poor Records and they may be in the Portmouth Record Office or the main Hampshire Record Office in Winchester.
Have you looked on the various censuses for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901?, these are on The National Archives, Kew, website.
I would also suggest looking in Gosport (also known as Alverstoke) just across from Portsmouth and also on the Isle of Wight.
Her parents seem to have had quite a few other children. This is them in 1881. Charles is a master cooper employing 2 men and 2 boys, and young Mary Ann is a dressmaker.

Thanks very much. I did mean that they had no other children at the time of Mary Ann's birth

Thankyou to everyone.
I have the census results and am most grateful for the info about adoption.
The baptism of Mary Ann took place at St. John's, Portsea in Dec 1867 at the same time and place as several of Charles' sister's children - must have been quite a party!
I will go and see what I can find out at Portsmouth record office or Winchester.
