I have been unable to trace a birth certificate for my father Alfred Bruff. He was born in 1892 in Shoreditch London and appears on the 1901 census but his birth certificate seems to be missing. Any ideas what avenues I can explore?

Do you know if Alfred's parents were married before he was born? You could try his mothers maiden name... I found a Henry Bruff marriage Shoreditch dec qtr 1892 shoreditch 1b 547 could this be his father?

Yes, this is my grandfather. My father was possibly illegitimate or may have been taken in by the Bruff family. It was required by law to register births around this time but I find it frustrating that I can not pin down any certificate. Thanks very much for your help.
