It seems (according to the news) that the 2 million micro films kept in the LDS vaults are to be all put on the Internet !! It doesn't give a time as they don't know how many volunteers they will need and how long it will take.

What impact will this have ? i know they have the BMD's and Census's, but which Census's will it be ?

Will this make Family History 'easy' or 'easier' in the future ? Or is it still a case of 'you still need to know who you are looking for' ?

Will this make the likes of BMD indexes, 1901 1837 etc obsolete ? Will there still be need to apply for certificates?

    Any comments please ...
    HAL.

It will be interesting as to whether this means the actual documents are to go online, if so we can then see those that are from actual documents and those which have been submitted from other sources. The one area that is missing from LDS are the burial registers which are just as important for family historians.

As I understand when the LDS microfilmed the records they covered the period to 1875, so anything after that time or sent to record offices after the mid-1970s would not be on the microfilms. As far as birth, marriage and death certificates are concerned this should be unaffected as they are not on the LDS system (which covers parish registers) after 1837 for England and Wales and 1855 for Scotland.

I am sure researchers will find this plan a help but it does take the fun out and we could get lazy and miss clues.

    Hi dmatt77,
Speaking as a government employee there is no such thing as an 'Expert' when it comes to government department's policy or changes to procedures.
    Sorry to be negative.
    Regards
Spike Thanks for the reply dmatt77.

    Hi Hal,

Fair comment. Whilst we know that with all the genealogy information now on the net it has encourged more people to trace their family trees. This in turn has increased the pace of the trans-scribing and storing the hard copies of, for example census returns, on data bases to ease access.

I have two worries with this. Firstly to save on storage space / costs what will be happening to the origional hard copies and with the trend of out servicing of data storage who and where will this data be kept?

    Any thoughts
    Regards
    Spike
