Just discovered one of my relatives, born in Birmingham, commited suicide in 1928. Would like to find out more about this. There would have been a coroners report and maybe police reports. Also where would a suicide be buried? Does anyone know where I can find more information?

    Evening nivens.

There is a 75 year closure on inquest records and usually within those 75 years they manage to lose them. If they do survive they will be held at Birmingham Archives. You will be better off looking for a newspaper report of the death and the inquest. Again, Birmingham Archives hold all the locals on fiche and film.

As to burial, Birmingham have a plethora of civic cemeteries so no problems with a burial. Unfortunately Birmingham Cemeteries charge Β£14 per half an hour to search for one name! Best bet is to contact Birmingham Archives who have all the burial details for all the cemeteries on fiche and film.

This does demonstrate the usefulness of somewhere like Birmingham's Archive Service. They are a wonderful set of staff who are always willing to help and assist and go that extra mile for a person. They hold a plethora of records local to the area such as for Warks, Staffs, Worcs and so on plus national records to. For full details of all holdings, go to www.birmingham.gov.uk and then click the links for the library and archive services.

As far as I understand the rigors of church protocol, normally those committing suicide are not buried in church land. However, I also believe that this matter is up to the conscious of the local vicar/priest, who has to make the decision on whether or not to carry out a service in such cases.
I haven't been able to find out when such a practise began and can't say for certain if this applied in the 1920's. However, may I suggest that you begin looking for your ancestors burial place in the local public cemetery. Beginning at this point may cut down the volume of searchs which you have to make.
    Good luck.
