    Re: Abwehr or Abwer?
As far as I am led to believe the German acronym ABWEHR; otherwise known as 'German Military Intelligence' - 1933 / 1944; may stand for 'Arbeitlung Werkshaft Heron' or a 'Battalion of Working Class Hero's'. One 'technical expression' or organisation of the ABWEHR was the BRANDENBURG 'special forces' unit which operated behind enemy lines between 1939 and 1944.
As far as I am led to belive; REICH Foreign Minister RIBBENTROP had formal 'COMMAND and CONTROL' of 'German Military Intelligence' from the day Adolf Hitler was elected Chancellor. His 'German Secret Service' work with the so called 'Brandenburgers' in 1940 was 'part and parcel' of the 'espionage and sabotage' network he had created during the late 1930's beyond the borders of the REICH as it stood on the 1st September, 1939.
My question is: What is meant by the acronym ABWER?
Usually written 'Abwer'; it traditionally refered to 'German Naval Intelligence' as far as I am aware.
ps; the weird detail is that CANARIS Ad IMP is usually linked to the ABWEHR rather than the ABWER: 'German Military Intelligence' rather than 'German Naval Intelligence'. Why?

From the little I know about such matters, I think you've got quite a lot garbled there (e.g., Ribbentrop wasn't foreign minister, or a minister of any kind, until quite late in the 1930s).

What I do know is that "Abwehr" isn't an acronym, it's derived from the root verb "wehren" (= to defend), as were Reichswehr and Wehrmacht; it could translate almost literally as "Fending off", which indicates that it was a counter-intelligence organisation. Where you get ABWER as an acronym from, I don't know, but I would think it's just a misprint.

The other thing I understand about the general context is that government under the Nazis bordered on the chaotic, with several organisations all engaged in turf wars as their masters tried to build their own little empires. There isn't necessarily much consistent or coherent rationale to how the different organisations related to each other.

Let's just say that David has his own view of history, (not to mention an abundance of block capitals) Patrick, but we have yet to learn of any solid evidence.

    Hi raundsgirl,

you appear to be a regular on this website and maybe you can answer the following question:

I also replied to David James Wall request for help - however, I used several "foreign" German words in my reply. Incidently, I used exactly the same German words that David had used - I simply corrected the German spelling and explained their meanings (in English).
However, I was blocked during moderation.

David used foreign words and so have many of those that responded to his requested for info.

I have appealled against the blocking of my helpful answer to David, however, my appeal was not upheld by the moderators.

I have no problem adhering to "House rules" but this seems to be going too far .

Why can this be? Or are there two sets of rules that I am not aware of?
As you are probably aware, I am a relatively newcomer to this site and have been very pleased with the help that you have all given me.

I personally, consider this particular blocking by the moderators as somewhat petty. Maybe you, other members or even the moderators may wish to comment on this.

    regards

    bg

There aren't two rules, bg, there is just erratic application of the rules. Sometimes these are heavy-handed in the extreme and at other times people seem to get away with amazing latitude. Intentions have apparently no bearing on the matter, so the fact you were trying to elucidate a poster makes no difference.

Other posters have had trouble with this 'foreign language' prohibition too, yet at other times people are allowed to use words unknown to most of us quite liberally. It makes no sense. It's one thing to want people to talk in a language we all understand, it's quite another to forbid posts that explain the odd word in a different language.

Just persevere and sigh, like the rest of us. Best wishes here,

    Caro.

agreed .. but don't feed the troll. I've been guilty of that in the past, but now I'm going to follow Poe's Raven - "Nevermore"
