When I was wandering round my computer documents yesterday I came across a list of the things we had done and enjoyed most in Britain in 2004. Feel free to comment or add to it. I still think of Kenilworth Castle as my favourite, impressive as a building, great history, and well set out for tourists too.
The first choice is my husband's and then mine:
Number of Castles/ Abbeys/ Ruins – 25
Him: Kenilworth Castle nr Birmingham where Elizabeth 1st was entertained for 16 days or so and they spent the equivalent
of about Β£10 million, Me: same
Number of Churches/ Cathedrals – 19
Him: Eastry church nr Sandwich with Deverson gravestones,
Me: Beverley Minster
Number of Restaurant/ Pubs for special meals – 72
Him: very tricky – evening at Portmeirion Hotel, Mellington
Hall in Wales, Middle of the Earth - Blackpool . .ooh too tricky,
Me: impossible, Magpie CafΓ© and Gabitas (Spanish) in Whitby,
Nonna’s in Sheffield.
Number of Museums/ Galleries – 43
Him: D-Day Museum in Portsmouth at 60th Anniversary,
Me: Museum in Rugby, The Deep in Hull
Number of Towns/ Villages – 135ish (stopped long enough to eat/ take
photos, at least an hour)
Him: well, barely possible to choose, Sheffield was just
fine, Me: same, Llanidloes, Shrewsbury, Leamington Spa
Number of Events – 56ish
Him: Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Welsh Agricultural Show,
Me: cricket at Lord’s)
Best Placenames we visited: Fryup, Crackpot, the Slaughters, Scrooby
and Dungsworth!
Seem to have missed battlefields, where I think we would both choose Battle (Hastings). And theatre which would have been The Crucible at the Crucible. (Maybe these came under Events.)
Cheers, Caro.
