I am researching the family history for a 90 year old gentleman who was a British sniper at the battle of Monticasino, he also took part in the North African campaign. It would be wonderfull if he could be recorded so that all his stories are not lost. I have no idea how this is done and would be gratefull for any help.

Can't say about recording these valuable memories, but have a look at Wikipedia - "Battle of Monte Cassino". Grim stuff.

    Hi,
This might be the best place to start,

I hope you manage to arrange for his account to be recorded, there are so few left who endured this nightmare.

Β  Will you give us this 'gentleman's' name please and then we can help you research the family too?!

You could record him yourself or write up his memories if he is willing. Then your local historical society or museum or library could well be interested in them. For official oral histories there are lots of things to work through, but unofficially the best thing to do is take a note of his personal details - name, parents' names, birthdate and place, education, jobs, army details, politics, religion, partner, children for your records. Then just ask him the questions you want answered, either just to do with his war experiences, or in more detail. I have never tried to record someone on tape, but have written down what they say, written it up and then have them correct it before it goes anywhere further (in my case the local museum/historical society for family research purposes).

But there are often organisations doing oral histories and you might be able to find a local one who would be interested in this man. I recently heard a radio interview with a woman in NZ who had interviewed all the people 90-plus in her town and made their stories into a book. These days it is quite simple to put together your own book. Then donate a copy to various places (I presume the same situation is in Britain where any book printed has copies sent to the national library or archives or somewhere. Then they would have it on record.)

It is usually spelt Monte Cassino, but perhaps the way you have spelt it is more Italian, I don't know.

    Cheers, Caro.

Booth Hunter, 'atcofam' cannot post the gentleman's name as he is still alive!
