On yesterdays programme your expert examined a small book of shorthand
characters, which he thought was a shorthand edition of the Bible. Is it
not more probable that it was Jeremiah Rich's "The Whole Book of Psalms
in meter" that was published about the year mentioned, i.e. 1660.
The expert seemed to think that the shorthand system used was the
invention of Jeremiah Rich but it seems to me that it was more likely to
be Thomas Sheldon's shorthand system, which he started developing in
1626, and was largely used by Pepys when he started his diary in 1660.

Not having seen the programme, or therefore the book, I can only assume your doubts are well founded, Jim.
However it is worth noting that there were several bibles also published in the period using Rich's system of shorthand, most notably by William Addy Though if that were the case then the "expert" was remiss in not noticing the rather conspicuous engraving of Addy in the frontispiece of the bible - one of the rare occasions when a living person's portrait was included in any edition of the book.
Rich's own name as "author" also appeared on a 1660 shorthand edition of the New Testament.
