Are you about, TP? I saw this article in the Metro this morning, and it reminded me of Charles 'Squire' Waterton & what he used to do,
I wonder what he would make of this guy?

Hi Grasshopper
I am about, and if only I had known I could have picked up a Metro on the bus today. Can you explain further? Charles 'Squire' Waterton was the naturalist who has, or at least had, a room devoted to his activities in Wakefield Museum.
One of my daughters has been trying to promote a plan for a TV programme on modern English eccentrics. One of them was going to be me!! Cheek. Fortunately the movers and shakers didn't bite.
Kind regards,
TP

It was a bit of a surprise for me to find the article.
Do you still visit the uni library? If so, I could hang on to it for you (altho I break up tomorrow for 2 weeks.)
I'd love the idea of a programme about eccentrics!
Going to hop off to my pit now, but post if you're still about.
Feeling a bit raw 2day - Uncle passed away this morning

I found the pictures of the New Zealand "creatures" utterly revolting: they made me remember a dreadful image I've had in my head since the early 1970s - I think it was from Lindsay Anderson's film "O Lucky Man!" - a human male (alive) in a medical research centre with a pig's body. Anderson was trying to make a serious political point, but it was absolutely horrible. I suppose it's the thought of what science - not just weird taxidermists - might soon be able to do that makes me so uncomfortable. That said, I once saw a heraldic badge which I rather liked - it was a sort of hedgehog rampant with a dolphin's tail.
The Victorians were great fans of taxidermy weren't they?
I'd never heard of Charles "Squire" Waterton, but I've been fascinated to read about him. What an eccentric - and fancy having *eight* saints in your ancestry, including Thomas More! I love the sound of his tableau - "The English Reformation Zoologically Determined" - all those famous men ending up as a row of stuffed reptiles! What a pity the tableau has been lost.
Article about Waterton here:

Ta muchly for the link, altho most of the pics are different from those in the Metro article.
That 2 headed bird / mammal creature is freaky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Temperance - if you ever visit Wakefield, pop in to the city museum, they have a permanent exibition about Waterton.
