Glorious 39.

  Sunday's film on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ2 seems to have been a disappointment to pretty well everyone who has commented upon it but particularly so to myself because I hoped it would deal with the topic of the sympathy felt by probably a large section of the British Establishment with Hitler and Naziism in general.
  There is some evidence, together with some conjecture, that this sympathy was present and there is the strange event involving the journey by Rudolf Hess to this country in 1941. This, dismissed as the aberration of a madman at the time, was undertaken in a plane that had its range increased by skilled modifications.
  Some suggestion as well that Nazi sympathies went to the very top in that the Windsors were involved and, if they were, that would mark as a traitor the uncle of the present queen.
  So, is the topic, even after 60 years, still 'too close to home' or has a properly researched study been done and published?

  I don't think it's any secret that in the 30s there were people from all walks of life who admired Oswald Moseley and thought that Fascism had a lot to offer. It wasn't only Diana Mitford that admired Hitler and it seems to be an accepted idea that Edward and his wife did.
  When it became clearer what the Nazis were doing, and once war was declared, I think all ideas like that were cast aside except in a few cases. For myself, I think we had a lucky escape when Edward abdicated, his prescence as King might well have undermined this country's struggle to win the war. He was too much of a lightweight, and as for her................

  Shouldn't mention it here of course but there is an interesting programme about Wallis Simpson coming up on Channel 4 on Wednesday evening.
  When it comes to Nazi sympathies among the British ruling class I think that such a phenomenon would be easy to understand bearing in mind the hatred that both shared for Bolshevism. Anti-semitism was a shared attitude as well.
  The timing of the visit by Hess, coming just before the German imvasion of the Soviet Union, could be significant and it could be that Hitler hoped Britain would remain inactive while the Wehrmacht dealt with the 'common enemy'.
  In the event, it was a long time before Allied land forces started a 'second front' and took some of the pressure off the Red Army.
  I still think that there is a story to be told here but many years will need to pass before we are told the whole truth.

  No reason why you can't mention it on here! This is only a message board hosted by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ website; no one on it has any connection with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.
  
  I'm a bit wary of Wallis in the hands of Ch4. I have a nasty sneaking feeling that they like the "Mills & Boon 20th Century History" approach too much and it will be more of the "Great Romantic Passion between two misunderstood people" pap.
  Luckily, as we have no TV, I shall be listening to the radio instead.
  
  Sorry, but I think you're looking for a story where none exists.
