Did anyone watch last night's programme which dealt with a mass grave in York in the Civil War In particular, the medical history side was fascinating to me.

slightly off subject but why do the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ use music even in a programme like this. I guess i must be thankful they didn't drown the explanations of research work proceeding.

It was fascinating and reminded me of the Secrets of the Dead episode from a decade ago, about the Battle of Towton dead, which had signs of mutilation?

My wife and I did (and last week's). I agree it was interesting but it would be a lot better if they dispensed with the irritating practice of having a voiceover immediately repeat anything of significance that any of the team says. "X thinks that.......". Yes, we know - we just heard her say so.

They do also have a tendency to labour the blindingly obvious. Last week, they told us that four bodies found at the bottom of a sheer 15m drop in a cave must have been dropped down there. Well, yes. There they were, lying on the cave floor, and there clearly weren't any stairs. This week, we were told that the country was divided during the Civil War, which I would have thought is a prerequisite for having a civil war in the first place

Colonel, the point is in the series title surely: "Cold Case". The team start from the beginning with a new investigation. They are told where & in what position the bones were found & start from there. Murder, sacrifice, battle victims, horrible accident? We had the advantage of seeing the images from the caver's investigation. Xanthe didn't have that information until she went to the area & saw those images afaik.

Yes, 'Civil War' would infer a country divided against itself.

great, I got a thread title in recent discussions listing!

What we did get was some interesting information about how people who would now be classed as disabled were treated in past. Basically unless you were supported by your family you had to work at something.
Even having his knee fused at 90o, probably from birth, did not stop the man from being involved, possibly in a peripheral role, in the seige. These days no- one would think that such a person could be involved.

Something of his spirit seems to have come down to the Afghan war vets. who have lost limbs and yet choose challenges which would scare someone with a full set of limbs.

The young man who walked with his leg strapped up soon got the hang of walking with his crutch. Perhaps our man from the Civil War didn't make any allowances for his disability and just got on with whatever needed doing. Cook, tailor, though with his strong physique could he have been an armourer?.
