Yesterday , the bbc boards on religion were closed down.....This was an historically wrong thing to do....
We are told that the bbc had to close them because of cuts.........
    MMMmmmmm.......Cuts...!
Is it possible that these boards have been closed for other more sinister reasons...?
They [the boards] were a good source for all sorts of different information and by closing them people [liscence paying people] have been prevented from having thier say.....on what-ever subject matters that take thier fancy....
    Like financial robberies..
    War in the oil fields....
    Civil unrest in Greece.....
    Revolution in a million places....
    Government policys.....
    The teachers strike......
And a myriad of other things.......
Closing these boards will prevent all discussions on these subjects on these boards , for many many people and i would ask people from all places to watch out for the closing of other government [financial] controlled entities

For if thier argument..[bbc] was valid that they [the message boards are never used] then why is this board still open....?
Or are you all so deep in "it" that they feel safe that your not gonna let the cat out of the bag.....
Shame on you all and shame on the bbc.......And fascism here we come....

    chefone,

sorry to hear that your boards have been closed down, but none of us know when the History boards will close, we may all be part of the cut when our turn comes around and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

I have not used the boards you mention and dont know if they are little used or not, but none of us feel safe in the knowledge that we will be here forever and with blogs and FB**k Tw*tter all becoming widely used then perhaps the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ feel that no use spending money here anylonger.

I know The Family Trees Board which I am a member is not used as much as it once was and with the new program about to be aired we may get a few new members of the public requiring our help but the membership has dwindled from about three years ago when it was a fast moving board which we could barely keep up.
I hope you can find a new source to air your viewpoint soon.

    Edna

i think there are 9 boards left and Ouch the disability board is about to close.

Go to the Archers Board, you will find refugees from all sorts of boards there. But we are all painting the deckchairs on sinking ships. I suspect blogs are easier to work with than message boards which need moderators. Not sinister reasons surely.

Actually I believe that your premise is wrong.. Historically and biologically when things reach a certain level of lack of vitality they tend to expire, and sometimes decisions are made to short-cut that process, as in a process of Medical Triage when Medical Professionals have to prioritize the use of scarce resources.

As others have said in this case those with a vital and lively interest in discussing those kind of issues have quite a lot of alternatives, and there are parts of the world where much greater efforts are being made to suppress the potential of modern communications.

The real problem- it seems to me- in Britain and perhaps especially in England is a cultural one compounded by the encouragement and promotion of a culture of "apathy" and "leave it to the professionals" especially since 1945. So I am not sure that too many tears will be lost over the demise of threads on which some people have tried to really tackle in a meaningful way the issues of the day. "Garden-fencing" seems more appropriate. "Let's keep it simple"

The various Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ current affairs boards were always well used. But freedom of debate was progressively withdrawn, so instead of the original boards for both domestic and foreign news on which anyone could start a thread, we are now restricted to the anodyne (and ironically-named) 'Have Your Say' facility, which offers the opportunity to post a limited number of characters on one of two or three often trivial topics selected for us by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. Even commenting on the content of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ news programmes on the 'Points of View' board is verboten - the mod will close the thread and, presumably with a straight face, refers users to 'Have Your Say [not]'.

Clearly the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ does not wish to allow us any meaningful facility to comment on current affairs. Perhaps they don't want discussion on religion either? After all, someone might offer an opinion that conflicts with the official Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ line.

I share your frustration with "Have Your Say".. In part it seems to serve only to give Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ journalists the opportunity to produce almost a scatter diagram- so many "For" and so many "Against", on the basis that what seems to pass for debate these days is putting face to face people who will never agree, and have been chosen to put on a "good fight" to entertain the masses as if these were Roman Games.

The point of a meaningful debate in fact is that people who see different sides of an issue may exchange their own fragments of truth and begin the process of finding a comprehensive solution.

Having just referred to the Inuit elsewhere, apparently they had a custom that when two people had a irrecocileable difference they had to come before their assembled community and get everyone to laugh with them, and against their opponent. When they laughed for only one of them, the other one packed his things and left to try to find another community.

I would like to believe that the English moot hall was less vicious with the idea that eventually everyone has to work together for the good of the Commonweal.

    Hi Edna....
Thank you for your post , and i must appologise for the lateness of my reply,,smiley - alienfrown
Not fair to close any "points" of diffusional communication and it would be a real tradegy if these boards went the same way.
    A point you make about

"we may all be part of the cut when our turn comes around and there is nothing we can do to stop it."
    Is a scarey point.....
This closure of our boards...Just happened , and no chance was given for any intelligent representations to be made There was a lack of informative advice with regards "objection" to any bbc decisions made , even though the decision that was made affected many individuals and groupings....

As an example of the issues that will not come under debate is the present "News Corp" scandal , along with other stuff that affects millions...
My "slur" , if you like , upon the Boffins on this board "your all in on it" was based on my experience posting here ..[under various identities] and debating with individuals who , i felt , could of behaved more morally consciously on a lot of issues made...
I personally join you on your views of your board at ancestry....As i have used them myself and found it useful , helpful and informative...I have also , on many occasions , advised friends and strangers that the bbc ancestry board is a good place to start when investigating ancestral history....
Thank you very much for your post..smiley - aliensmile

    Hi jenny..[mess 4]
My suggestion of the boards closing for "sinister reasons" does possess meat on the bones ...Many people from many different societies and culture used these boards for many reasons..[not least political reasons] and in a world where historical transition is taking place...
Some boffin [sitting in a windowless room] has decided that "Mere Mortals" cannot be trusted to share in the issues of the nature of this Global transition .......
Maybe , if we are consulted on any decisions to close these boards , we could all make representation as to why they shoud'nt be closed...And have direct access to the place where such a decision is made...
    Thanks jen..

    And another thought .........
What does the British Gases announcement say about the leader of our glorious Government.....?
Was he [David Cameron] aware that such a big corporate "consortium" was gonna use his press conference to [argumentively] hide from the public its intention to show "extortion" towards its customers..?....
Maybe Mr Camoron did not know about the timing of this announcement...[surely he's not that stupid] which in itself is a concern , because that suggests that the leader of our democracy has no say , in relation to the financial well being of the citizens he was elected to represent...[energy bills...16 and 18% rise's from a company that made 3 quarters of a Billion profit from residential energy supply]

chefone, you have missed the bus on that one. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ are not going to reinstate any closed message boards. So you either blog or try social networks. Or set up a proboard yourself with like minded people.

Not sure what human compassion has to do with it anyway.

Well done SilverJenny that looks very promising

Chefone if you want to make a protest I have just seen an advert on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ saying that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust would like feed-back on all aspects of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ..It gave a weblink something like www.bbc.uk/bbc trust

You could no doubt find it on one of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ webpages.

But as Silverjenny has inferred I think that there will be those who argue that technology has now moved on from sites like this.. These days it seems everyone is expected to Twitter or Blog.

Not sure if you have seen this Jack but could it be part of the reasoning for the removal of the religion boards, just a thought.
