After my Mum died we found an old photo in amongst all the old family ones. It is of a lot of people gathered around the perimeter of a town square, some are on the balconies of surrounding buildings. There are people in uniform, some with guns and some in dress that look like they may be judiciary and to the left of the space in the middle is a man with his head bowed.

On the back it says, I think this is right but the writing is difficult and a little smudged.

'You can pick out all those named in the story, the accused to the left

The little plaza is in Andorra la Valle, the capital,

(this is a most notable picture- never published) '

There is a stamp on it indicating it was printed by ARXU FOTGRAFIC V. Claveral Andorra la Vella.

My great Uncle used to do some journalism and I believe he was in Spain during the 1930s. I wonder if this photo could be anything to do with the cavil unrest in Andorra in the 1930s.

I am reluctant to put the photo up on a public site but wondered of anyone knows anyone with a particular interest in the history of Andorra?

I can't help in the slightest, but what a fascinating (if rather sad) glimpse into such an alien time and place.

    What an extraordinary story!

It's so odd that Andorra never got engulfed by Spain (or France), and has clung on to its indepdence. Though, searching through to Wiki from the post above said that the President of France is one of the two princes of Andorra (a bishop is the othr one) and so is that very rare beast - elected royalty!

I do like these tiny 'pocket polities' like Andora, Lichtenstein, etc. Small but fascinating! Sort of 'historical fossils' that evaded, by one means or another, the big sweeping currents of history that changed the world around them.
