Well done to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 4 programme on Stalin. David Reynolds' excellent narration could easily transfer to a radio programme. I had previously thought that Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ History had lost the plot with Smelly Cities. No stupid piles of dung, no gratuitous shots of Dan Snow's naked chest. "WWII, 1941 The Man of Steel" was history for grown-ups

Completely agree .... cracking history documentary. After recent depressingly bad ones from the Beeb a very nice surprise. I only know DR from r4 ...... a distinctive vocal manner but effective, not affected ....... lots of interesting new information and explanation, but sometimes hard to watch and learn of the cruel fate of Stalin's victims.

It made clear how vulnerable societies can be to monsters whose enormities they can't anticipate because they are so unthinkable.

Well done Beeb with this one ..... excellent archive material too.

I agree too. Proper history with no need for gimmicks. But it did make me remember why I'm afraid I admired Stalin. He was always underestimated espeacially by Lenin and Trotsky who only ever seemed to see him as some gangster to raise money for the "cause". But he had a brain and the idea of him listening, simply listening to all those people posturing and grumbling around him, with his amber eyes and fox like expression as he pulled on his pipe and simply listened....He should never have been underestimated. To make him Commisar for Nationalities was suicide.
I loved the way they picked up on his Georgean accent too, George Formby giving the key note address to the patrician intellectuals? Good analogy! Trotsky and Lenin were so arrogant and failed to see what this man could do until it was far too late! Brilliant programme.
Does Stalin's rise to power prove Marx right or wrong when he said that individuals didn't matter. If there is a hole it will be filled by someone. I paraphrase! But along those lines. Stalin was NOT a Communist but were Lenin and Trotsky? Cheers Minette.
