    Hello,

I've been reading lately on the Glorious Revolution and subsequent risings/rebellions. Most of the works I have read seem to agree that William had a lucky break when James managed to 'escape' to the continent.

Had James chosen to remain - even after being caught the first time - what would the outcome have been....?

Would there have been a trial with a similar outcome to that which his father had to face? Would it be too much of a risk for him to be left alive as a central point that his supporters could rally too? Could he simply have been 'exported' to another country thus imposing an exile upon him?

Similarly, had his son been caught during his brief spell in Scotland during the '15 what fate would he have faced?

Had James chosen to remain and fight it out, he might have won!

The majority of the English people (as opposed to the rich and powerful, who he had managed to p*ss off with typical Stuart skill) had no desire for a Dutch Foreigner, and could well have rallied to his support.

But then, if he had the brains to do that, he wouldn't have p*ssed off all his potential supporters in the first place!

Too true. He even had the larger force had it come to a battle.

It seems strange that someone frequently praised for his bravery in his younger years - by Conde no less - lost his nerve when it mattered most.
