Photo of the Queen

    My mother (b. 1930) and I were l looking through some family photos today and came accross a photo of the Queen and Princess Margeret with thier dogs from about 1936. Can anyone suggest why she might have had the photo and why. My mother doesn't know at all.

    Hello Jim

    A lot depends on the format and context of the photograph.

    For example is it in keeping with the rest of the family photos (i.e. from the same roll) or is it unique looking? Is it a copy? Is it a posed photograph or is it a snap-shot? Are there any indications of whether it was taken in a public place or in a private location. Is it shot indoors or outdoors? Etc etc .

    There was a family photo taken in Windsor (on the the steps of Y Bwthyn Bach) which was popular at the time of Albert's accession, and especially in the run-up to his coronation as George VI when a bit of PR had to be hurriedly engaged in following the "scandal" of his brother's abdication. The picture is informally posed and features a few canines. Is that the one? If not there are still several other candidates issued for the same reason. Since the abdication occurred in December the photos include those taken some months beforehand when Albert was still Duke of York and still had no inkling he'd be anything otherwise in the foreseeable future.

    The one you found may have been issued with a sunday newspaper at the time or even as a cigarette card. Is there anything on the back which might indicate a printer?
