I was recently browsing the website of the Houses of Parliament and there I came across this:

Use the Houses of History to get your research started. It's full of colourful animations, engaging articles, images from Parliament's art collection and quotations from historical characters.Β

There is a timeline that provides informations not only about parliament, but also about the history of democracy in Britain.

IΒ΄ve enjoyed this, for others who might be interested in, there is the link:

Just click on the "Timeline Explorer" to start it.smiley - smiley

    Thomas,

hmm, some mixed feelings....after the timeline...
Started a thread about the comparison between the English and French parliament some weeks ago:

Perhaps this thread can add something to the discussion of the history of parliament in Britain. And for me is "parliament" a body of persons with a certain task....

    Kind regards and with esteem,

    Paul.

    In reply to PaulRyckier:

Thanks for your post Paul. IΒ΄ve had a look on your thread and personally I find it a bit hard to compare parliaments of various countries to find out where they differ. Although it has its interesting aspects. I also made comparisons between the Houses of Parliament and the German Parliament, but besides from the principles of democracy, the road is short for one has to consider the differences in each countries Parliamentary constitutions.

And for me is "parliament" a body of persons with a certain task....Β

To me "parliament" is more than what youΒ΄ve said. To me itΒ΄s the heart of legislation and therefore regarded on a higher level than just to see it in your way. Would our politicians, representing the people in parliament, act according to their "certain task", politics wouldnΒ΄t be considered that bad as it is, because that "certain task" means to serve oneself in the first place and secondly the people. ThatΒ΄s the opinion of most people, regarding the work of our MPs.

    Kind Regards,
    Thomas

    Re: Message 4.

    Thomas,

I have no time, so busy these days, but nevertheless a short reply.

First paragraph: I fully agree to you. I found it out on the French messageboard with the similar thread. One said to me: you can't compare France and England as for instance in the time of the forming of the parliaments, France was the most populated country of Europe, several times more than England and there were many other differences. And yes he was right too, the evolution in France was quite otherwise than in England. I made also the comparison with the short history of the Duchy of Burgundy and also there, although it was a simulation of the French way, it also evoluted in an other way due to the different circumstances. And yes as overhere, on the French messageboard, even with my in depth research exposed, there was little respons, because there are some similarities, but logical reasoning there are to many differences to compare both.

I wanted that to reply to Cass too in the other thread.

Second paragraph: I agree again with you. My phrasing was not very well formulated. I wanted to say that it was not the physical entity of the parliament that was important but more the ideas behind it that gradually laid to more participation of the common people. Not sure if I explained now better what I wanted to say.

    Kind regards and with esteem,

    Paul.

Thanks for your post Paul, which has enough explanations about what you meant in your previous post.

Your quotations from the French boards were interesting to read.

Happy Easter and till the next time.

    Kind Regards,

    Thomas
