Eagle of the 9th

  We are aware of the new film coming out recalling the supposed disappearence of the 9th Legion sent north to fight the Scots, although in my opinion they just got caught up in the Bank Holiday road works on the A1, and are still there. But how many other armies have simply vanished. We know to the legions in what is modern Germany, and of course the withdrawing force from Afghanistan during the First Afghan War. What others? There is stories of both a legion and then a French force marching into the desert and vanishing. Who else?

  Hi Grumpy, you hinted at the Teutoburger Forest massacre of the three Roman Legions, XVII, XVIII and XIX, but of course there was the famous incident of the 1/5th (Territorial) Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment that apparently 'vanished' at Gallipoli in 1915 during WWI.

  hereword, I'm aware of the Norfolk loss, but was it really a full battalion? I was under the impression it wasn't much more than a company, and because that company was made up of mostly Sandringham staff that was the reason so much fuss was made about them. During the muddy advances in Northern France, many more men simply vanished into the mud. There was a good Docudrama made about them though called All the Kings Men, starring David Jason. Worth looking out for.
