King Robert decided to dispatch his family to the Orkney Islands for their greater safety. Queen Elizabeth and other members of his family were captured by the English en-route, and taken prisoner. His twelve year old daughter was imprisoned in the Tower and some of the female members of his family, including his sister, Christina, suffered the humiliation of being held suspended in cages in full public view by Edward. His three younger brothers, Thomas, Alexander and Niall were all executed.

king Edward was this brutal?is this true?

Its mostly true , though it was his sister Mary , not Christina who along with Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan ( who had crowned Bruce) were hung up in cages in open air . His wife , daughter and other sisters were sent to a nunnery.

Robert de Brus had four brothers:

    Niall, born c.1276

    Edward, born c.1279

    Thomas, born c.1284

    Alexander, born c.1285

Niall, Thomas and Alexander were all captured by the English and executed.

Edward de Brus, the last surviving brother of Robert, at first continued to support his brother in his struggle against the English. However, by 1315 Edward Brus decided to pursue his own claim in Ireland. This struggle in Ireland was to last until 14 October 1318 when the mainly Scots-Irish army of Edward Brus (his army also included some disaffected Anglo-Norman lords including the de Lacy's), were defeated at the Battle of Faughart on 14 October 1318 by an Anglo-Irish army led by Sir John de Bermingham. After the battle the head of de Brus was severed from its body and sent to the English King, Edward II. As a result of this victory, de Bermingham was created 1st Earl of Louth. However, both Edward II of England and John de Bermingham, 1st Earl of Louth, were to come to a sticky end.

I can't call to mind the book but I read recently that this is a matter of interpretation and in fact the cages were more likely latticed cells within larger rooms.
