Apart from this wonderful and informative site, which has many knowledgeable and learned people in it's membership, which other history forums and websites offer the same, or similar level of education and interest? Does it depend upon the chosen site speciality?

There are perhaps several, maybe smaller and specialist sites, in theme or period, which offer the same value, but clearly the Beeb carries a famous name brand to boot? Have any great ones since 'deceased' since the internet really took off in the UK?

The internet, in popular terms as far as most of the public owning a home PC and logging in to surf, is only a decade or so old, and I thought of this topic after seeing one site, presumably an English 'pride'/nationalist site who- despite the froth and amateurish poetry and jingoism- stated in one of it's showpiece essays that King Alfred reigned from 871-924 (?? he died in 899) Lol.
Then they declined to comment or even show my guestbook criticism when this was pointed out, although I haven't bothered to check if this has since been remedied, or if there are any other such clangers.

Have popular social sites taken alot away from traditional forums in recent years? Also, what aspects ideally should a General history forum/website include or exclude in order to be successful?

    hello Man Alive

a messageboard I used to frequent back in the 1990s was the Falklands-Malvinas Forum. This was ostensibly a political/diplomatic discussion forum but in reality was much more of a history forum with particular emphasis on the 1982 war. The internet was still in its infancy back then and I remember being thrilled to be able to instantly communicate with someone in Tierra del Fuego, and someone in Sofia, Bulgaria and someone in Cardiff all at the same time and receive instant replies.

The forum is by no means 'deceased' and is still going. It went through a format change around 2004, however, and (ironically for a history forum) most of the archive from 2000-2004 was lost. This included threads marking the 20th anniversary of the conflict for example and was disappointing for many users as can be imagined. The earlier threads from before 1999, however, were subsequently salvaged and archived. I haven't posted there for years though.

Thanks Vizzer, I am interested in such views because I myself was only really online and posting on forums around 2003-4 for the first time. It was magical receiving replies from people around the world on Xmas day!!

As for History forums, i wondered which of the best and worst had come and gone, or how they had evolved with theh the global internet boom.

Thanks Haesten, I know that the great Anglo-Saxon forum, Da Engliscan gesithas, maybe due to spam and possibly also due to extremist 'Political' morons trying to post, has reduced it's registration process to a subscription only.

This is a sign of increased internet traffic influencing a website, as I was outlining in my OP? Are any other sites driven to this measure? And would they grow like this?
