I have heard that there is to be a programme on the sinking of the Laconia on Â鶹ԼÅÄ2 this month, but can't find details in my Radio Times, or on the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's website. On the latter, there is a small piece about Alan Bleasdale writing a play about this in 2008. Dose anyone know anything about this programme?

The Laconia incident had far-reaching consequences, and no doubt played a major part in shaping the rules of engagement during the ‘Battle of the Atlantic.’

    you might try this:

    deals with the miniseries

    but

gives the detail I think you require ref the coming TV airing... dates and times etc.

Looks like good viewing to me.

    Regards bandick…

    shifvan... Me too…

I watch a lot of channel 12 Freeview… Yesterday… and I’m sure I’ve seen a portrayal of the incident there… remember more specifically the lifeboats being towed behind the sub.
But on the other hand, I could be wrong.

    Shivfan,Bandick,

I completely concur with the above sentiments - an excellent dramatisation!

Following on from yesterday evening's gripping drama, tonight on Â鶹ԼÅÄ2 at 1930hrs (7.30 p.m.) six survivors of the Laconia give their personal testimonies.

During WWI a great uncle served as an Engine Room Artificer in the Merchant Navy. His vessel was sunk as a result of enemy action. Yet he and the rest of the British crew survived the ordeal as a result of being rescued by the German Navy!

I’m sure I’ve read recently that the captain is still alive aged 92… don’t know when that was written though… it’s heartening to know that there is a streak of humanity in some of us, when all seems lost.
I’m very interested to know what happened to the American aircrew that shot them up… and the officers back at base that gave the orders… perhaps tonight we’ll find out.
Don’t know if you looked at the wiki sites I posted on M2 but it lead to a new policy ref the treatment of survivors at sea. Dreadful.

    regards

If it's the UBoat captain Hartenstein you are referring to, he (and all of his crew) were killed on the UBoat's next mission when they were bombed by US planes off Barbados.

Hi George… yes, after watching the episode on Â鶹ԼÅÄ 2 last night… I was seeing the need to point it out on this thread. I’ve spent hours trying to find the article that made me think he survived. I’ve obviously got it wrong.

I’m sure I’ll find it; it can only have been in the last couple of weeks.

    regards Bandick.
