Richmond, North Yorkshire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Legends
Nearly 200 years ago some soldiers found an entrance to a tunnel near the castle keep. They could not fit into the tunnel so they elected to send a regimental drummer boy. The boy was asked to walk along the tunnel and beat his drum so that above ground the soldiers could follow the noise. They did this for 3 miles before the sound stopped unexpectedly. This was never explained and today a stone marks the spot the noise stopped. More confusingly the entrance can also not be found. Today schools celebrate this local legend with children marching through town annually. Legend claims that on some cold nights you can hear the faint sound of the drummer boy still.
the boy was lost?

Heard the same story about a number of places. Sometimes it's drummer. In Culzean Castle Scotland, it is a piper.

There is also a legend that King Arthur lies sleeping beneath the Castle.

A shared surname does not necessarily suggest a relationship. Besides the name of the Castle is not the same as the family who were awarded the area by William the Conqueror, and who built the castle.
Wiki has this
" As a further punishment he (William the Conqueror) divided up the lands of north Yorkshire among his most loyal followers. Alain Le Roux de Ponthievre of Brittany received the borough of Richmond [1] and began constructing the castle to defend against further rebellions and establish a personal power base for one of the most extensive Norman estates in England which covered parts of eight counties - the Honour of Richmond. The Dukes of Brittany became the owners of the castle though it was often confiscated for various periods by English Kings."

That legend about the drummer in the tunnel is quite common, but that's all it is, a legend.

I'd look for confirmation of the story (something more reliable than Wikimisleadia anyway) before getting too excited about this.
