Just thinking back to some prices in old money (e.g. Othercrispytoffeebarsareavailable, sixpence, 2Β½p) and feeling quite old.
Quite old and quite poor.
Two weeks today - 15th February - is the 40th anniversary of D-Day (Decimalisation Day) and, Gid, you could have a "money" special with choons by bands as varied as Pink Floyd.
And the Flying Lizards.
Reading the wikipedia article I see that the catchy slogans
"Give more - get change,
Give more - get change - UH!"
and
"Use your old coppers in sixpenny lots"
were actually by the Scaffold. So you could add them to the list...

You could have Queen, because Brian May uses sixpences as plectrums.
Or Sixpence None The Richer.
(thinks....)
groat, farthing, ha'penny, penny, tuppenny, thruppenny bit (both silver and polygonal), (there was a 4d in Maundy Money), sixpence (tanner?), shilling (bob), florin, half-crown, crown, 10 shilling note, pound, guinea.
(Not sure about the groat, it's either a quarter of a penny or 4d)
Florin and the Fag Machine (sorry).

harold,
I'm still keenly awaiting the day when a DJ plays Reverend Bozie Sturdivant's ' When I've Done The Best I Can, I Want My Crown '
A cracking name and extremely good song !

Of course Kevin's song is more or less the same one ! Wonder if he ever heard Rev Bozie which I suspect pre-dates the Big Joe Williams version that the great Coyne borrowed.
and, in "Watership Down", one of the main characters, Hrairoo, is called "Fiver" in English.
So how about "Bright Eyes"?
NiBble - can you see what I did there in order subtly to introduce the new Year of the Rabbit?
Paul, I was hoping to find a composer credit on the record but it says "Trad, arranged by Coyne" or similar. I'll see if I can get to hear the other versions to compare. I've never heard of Rev Bozie, did he record much?
I'll correct myself - groat is 4d because a farthing's a quarter of a penny.

Buddy can you spare a dime? (if other currencies allowed)
harold,
I don't think Bozie was recorded a great deal. I got my big Sturdivant hit in Woolworth one New Year's Day while waiting for the cinema to open! It can be found on this incredibly cheap but very fine quality gospel collection :
And here's the Rev's U-tube entry, his other greatest hit, ' Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down '

Anything by Peter Schilling...
When was decimal currency first mentioned in song? It has to be earlier than 1978 ("deep down in her pocket / she finds 50p")
Thanks, Paul. I'll probably buy the CD just to hear Arizona Dranes (I'm imagining lots of gurgling). I think the Golden Gate Qtet appear on my Leadbelly collection.
Well, I came up with a Downfall parody. It may be bad form to link to it (though it is swear-free) but you can find it under "Hitler Plans for D-Day".
There's always Tommy Steele and
"half a sixpence
Is better than half a penny
Is better than half a farthing
Is better than none".
Is there a remastered version of Mary Poppins - "feed the birds, one new P a bag"?
