    Hello

I didn't get where I am today without a bit of forward planning. With that in mind I've got an good idea for a thread in mid-March but never mind that now.

A bit closer than that we're going to do a 70's programme. I'd like one which celebrates the whole decade - pre and post Punk. Maybe even moving through the decade chronologically. Though that sounds like hard work to put together. In any case we are casting a wide net here so please tell us which songs would simply have to be in a half hour programme celebrating the 1970s.

    Thanks.

Kate Bush - wuthering heights. i just remember how utterly odd this sounded at the time - and still does. That and Baker Street sum up the late 70s for me.

Psycho Killer is another oddity, it could be any year, any decade really - it doesn't fit in at all.

It's the rule that every single documentary on punk has to start with a short clip of ELP interrupted by a smug commentator shouting "This is why punk 'ad to 'appen". I reckon you should restore balance by playing 3 hours of prog ending with a short clip of 'God Save The Queen' interrupted by a posh bloke complaining that they can't play their instruments.

I think something off "Spiral Scratch" by Buzzcocks would be a key addition to telling the story of the music in the UK in the 1970's

WOOW - too much to choose from T Rex (Electric Warrior & Slider) to David Bowie (Thin White Duke onwards) and then Roxy Music (with or without Mr Eno).

Gideon - you could probably split this into 2 shows? (now there's a thought!)

We could do a month's worth of shows but this time, for reason that will become clear, it's the 70s in 3 hours. Impossible but hopefully enjoyable.

Although I was born slightly after the 70's, I don't think a show about said era would be complete without a mention of Slade. They may have their detractors, but songs like Cuz I Love You from '72 are awesome.

And though the Band might be thought of as more of a 60's beast, I do believe The Kinks released Lola at the start of the 70's decade. And any excuse to play The Kinks is a good one.

The show wouldn't be complete without some reggae and funk so may I suggest:

    Dillinger: Cokane in My Brain
Toots and the Maytals: Funky Kingston
    The Brothers Johnson: Stomp!
    Patrice Rushen: Forget Me Nots

Jon Savage's Meridian 1970 compilation is a great source of material for the first year of the decade.

But if we hear anything from this album, we know where Gideon's been shopping!

Anyone remember the 'Top of the Pop' covers albums? Cheap birthday present, listened to once, deeply disappointing and then consigned to the back of the LP rack.....

I think that there are at least two streams of funk worth exhibiting on the '70s show.

Firstly there's the resurgence of James Brown and his roster of stars, exemplified superbly in the "James Brown's Funky People" albums. You can pretty much take your pick from that lot for me, although I do particularly love "Rock Me Again & Again & Again & Again & Again".

Secondly there's the rich seam of West African funk that, (to my ears at least), remained largely unexposed until recently. Again, you can probably pick anything from the Analog Africa or Soundway labels but I do particularly love the Sahara All Stars Of Jos' tune called "Take Your Soul".

The more I've thought about this the more impossible it becomes! I mean trying to list just one song from each year in the 70's is pretty tough. (Just picking one Bowie track from each year of the 70's, which is a good barometer of the times I think, isn't easy either).

Lots of good suggestions above. Some artists not yet mentioned I think

    - Nick Drake ('Northern Sky')
    - The Doors ('LA Woman')
    - Curtis Mayfield ('Superfly')
    - The Stooges ('Search & Destroy')
    - Big Star ('September Gurls')
    - The Flamin' Groovies ('Shake Some Action')
    - Kraftwerk ('Radioactivity')
    - Ultravox! ('Hiroshima Mon Amour')
    - Richard Hell ('Blank Generation')
    - Joy Division ('Shadowplay')

Definitely NOT Brian and Michael's "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs" please.

Also, there should be at least 2 Krautrock songs (and not I Want More by Can as that's too obvious)

I'd suggest Moonshake by Can, Hero by Neu! or the very wonderful One Morning by Brainticket.

At lest one african track too, Sorrow, Tears & Blood by Fela Kuti would be nice

Definitely Nick Drake's 'Northern Sky' and at the other end of the decade, 'Bed and Breakfast Man', by Madness, which, if I remember, was my 'Hit the Decs' 70s choice.

    Now, there was a feature.............
