The post by "atozband" who is going to see a band each month beginning with a different letter of the alphabet got me thinking.
That could be a great theme for a night, especially as we could submit ideas easily as many of us file our music alphabetically by artist.
Playing the music from recordings neatly side-steps the question of whether Andy Partridge actually goes on tour, or whether Poly Styrene is in a Buddhist monastery or not.
We would just have to be creative as behoves the country's best radio station, e.g. "Agitation Free" instead of "Abba".
My suggestions:
Agitation Free
Bang on a Can
Captain Sensible
Darling Buds
Eno, Moebius, Roedelius, and Plank
Front 242
Glove
Haig, Paul
Intastella
Jobson, Richard
Killing Joke
Lene Lovich (not Lucky Number)
My Vitriol
Neu!
Opus III (not Opus!)
Passions, The (not the film star)
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Strange, Richard (the Ghost of Brian Jones)
Theowing Muses
Ultravox!
Velvet Underground (coming at the end of a long list of Various Artists)
Wilde, Kim (but only with Nena in Change Alley)
x-mal deutschland (ha ha!)
umm no Ys or Zs in my compact disc collection!
Yazoo (cassette only)
Ideas for "Z" that haven't got beards? "Zawinul" is a great Eno track...
Young Marble Giants
Zoundz
As a 6Music listener, it goes without saying that I have a hugely eclectic, diverse range of cds that the average joe has never heard of, so purely hypothetically of course...
..what if, for 'i' you only have 'Inxs', and 'q', 'Queen' greatest hits?
..what if, for 'i' you only have 'Inxs', and 'q', 'Queen' greatest hits?Β
I - IAMX - I've not heard them on 6Music although a few Sneaker Pimps songs have made it to the airwaves. As for Q, I'll have to Google that or it could be a default to Queen.
I have just noticed - as Howard Devoto said, "to my eternal shame" - that I possess no compact disc, cassette, or record, where the artist's name begins with Q.
Could we have "Red Skies Over Europe" by Fischer-Z for a Z?
(I have three other albums by Fischer-Z and a "Greatest Hits"...) (though they do not feature frequently on 6Music)
For "Q", could we have "Queeg" from Red Dwarf? I have Red Dwarf on DVD, it's shiny and round too...
"There's something wrong in Europe" - Kid Creole
"If Europe is half as nice as heaven that you take me to" - Amen Corner
For Europe, read Paradise throughout...
Z for Zappa, I suppose? Probably not allowed to play the track I'd like to hear, though....
Lene Lovich - think I've a single of Bird Song - there are other songs!
There's Queens of the Stone Age too, although I'd far rather hear Queen! Something odd like "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" instead of the usual suspects.
As for Lovich, I have about three hours' worth of her oeuvre at Stiff..
How about "It's You, Only You"?
Gasp!
"Red Skies Over Paradise" !
Synth Britannia on TV now inspires me to alphabet of bands with letters. (Which allows the splendid Fischer Z)
ABC
BB King
CC Peniston
DC Lee
E L O
Simon F
Warren G
H2O
I Am Kloot
J Geils Band
KLF
LFO
M People
NWA
OMD
PP Arnold
Q Tips
REM
S Express
T Bone Burnett
UFO (yes that's right Bono)
VV Brown
W.A.S.P.
X Ray Spex
YMO
Fischer Z
(not ZZ Top because there is no such letter as "zee")
don't forget that the American pronunciation of "ZZ" is childishly rude in French.
Or should the "others are available" chain be pronounced "Tsitsi" as if in Italian?
Is there room here for Derek B, Eric B (no Spice Girls here) or Hubert Kah?
Queen Adreena.
