N'est Pas?
Contador's to lose? LA hanging up his cleats. Geraint Thomas parading the national jersey (that was some race on Sunday!)
I'm wondering if Basso and his Liquigas squad will be a factor. Sure to be interesting whatever. Roll on Rotterdam!
Oui Bien Sur, et aussi put etre Evans?
I don't think my CSE French is up to the job, mais jamais Evans, toujours deuxieme!
il est sûrement l'heure d'aller chercher le thread about le cyclisme qui gets trottéd out chaque année...
and can we have some Kraftwerk please? Maybe "Vitamin" (not as obvious as "Tour de France"...)
It's better than mine. All sorts of errors. I would be in trouble with Mr Daley.
For a musical angle - Armstrong would appear to be a fan of Band of Horses and possibly The National.
I intend to be in Paris for the final day - just as day trip though so I can spend more on promotional tut..not tut.. How do you spell that word?
Deerhoof - Midnight Bicycle Mystery
P.S. It's "peut-être", not "put etre". 0/10, see me after class.
Zut Alors!
Est-ce que votre frein fonctionne bien?
Oui, mais la chaine a pris de jeu.
I hesitate to suggest that someone's stereophonic radiogram is tuned to 6Music and playing something. That's "chaîne stéréophonique" I'm thinking of. If you can't load MP8-tracks to it, it'll be a dead expression now.
Wonder what "derailleur" is in French?
I don't know, but I favour a Huret system that has the 'fore-and-aft' front changer and the 'Louison Bobet'' rear changer which has a second gear-control cable which will adjust the tension on the rear changer.
In my cycling days I had a standard town bike made for me. It was cheapest.
I think the gears actually came from Japan! Giru no saikuru sha?
Heads up, everybody, the start of the Tour from Northern France (Rotterdam) is on at 17:00 today on ITV4 (you need one of those Johnny Vegas plus Monkey boxes).
However, when checking which German side it was on, I discovered that, although Asda has remaindered all the football flavour crisps, the South African soccer has not actually finished yet and Germany are playing this afternoon!
(I think the final may somehow be on at a similar time to Silverstone!)
So you can always tape one, though there are cycling highlights tomorrow... bet I know which side the cycling freaks will watch (though I found the soccer is on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Womblevision too)
I know nothing about cycling but a lot of my friends are really into it. Can anyone give me a couple of comments I can chuck into the middle of a pub conversation to make me look knowledgable, preferably to be said just before shaking my head sadly, puffing my cheeks out and exhaling loudly.
You could start a discussion on the relative merits of the derailleur system and the internally-geared hub. Most cycling enthusiasts would probably favour derailleurs, so you could simply restrict the discussion to that system and instead discuss the relative merits of the high normal (or top normal) and low normal (or rapid rise) systems. You could drop in references to the top three gear manufacturers such as Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo. You could mourn the passing of Simplex, Huret and Benelux whilst offering reasons for their departure from the market ("Simplex" because the word often appears in association with herpes; "Huret" because it sounded too much like posh people at the Henley Regatta; "Benelux" because it sounded like a washing powder for speed freaks).
Let us not forget braking systems. The history of cycle brakes is littered with terms such as: spoon, rim, rod-actuated, stirrup, calliper, side-pull, centre-pull, cantilever, linear-pull, roller-cam, delta.
I hope I've given you enough to go on for one evening. If you and your friends don't all fall out over this, you could continue the discussion by bringing up the subject of handlebars and perhaps court controversy by declaring a preference for Sir Gerald Nabarro over Jimmy Edwards.
Attention Chien! (Hier)
Week one always sees some scary crashes. But no more please. I don't blame Belgian roads.
Chapeau Chavanel. A very deserving winner - aggressive from the off, a fine break-away win. Shame to see no sprint. Not sure the go-slow tactic was appropriate - they all knew what to expect. Bring on the cobbles!
And I thought Gid was talking to chien du toît (roofdog) there.
It's really asking for it to play a record in French about rain...by Brookel Sharkey.
Did she just say "follow the cycle in me"???
NB coverage also on German public TV and German Eurosport...
Tsk. Cyclistes sanglants ennuyants.
Crazy pave-ing!
Mixing French and German now?
As for pub discussions, you could go for campag vs shimano, tubs vs clinchers, how mountain biking or motocross helps with bike control on wet cobbles.....and so on....
And it's "n'est-ce pas?".
Mixing French and German now?Â
He might just have been singing the Beatles' "Yesterday" in French.
Don't know what happens if you shout "Étienne" in a French crowd TBH. "J'arrive" is 100% innuendo-free unlike some more Birkin-and-Gainsbourgy alternatives...
Allez allez!
first mountain stage today, although 'only' cat 2.
i'll be cheering for Euskadi (as always).
give paris one more chance.
I think that is the end of Armstrong. A disaster of a day with three crashes and losing minutes from the favourites, the end of an era.
It looks between Evans, Schleck and Contador now. Another big mountain stage on Tuesday after the rest day.
And then there were two...
Guess so....
Some stage. I think Contador is going to have to bank on the time trial. Mind you, a lot of mountains left. Chapeau to Sanchez as well. And to you.
Riveting stuff. I have so much admiration for those guys. And in that heat! Andy S looked good today and Contador just about matched him. You're right - plenty of mountains left. Either of them could have a bad day. What a race!
Just about to go to the website and find out the day's goings-on....been at work.
You attack a fellow competitor with your front wheel and get a small fine, but using your head in the heat of the battle to maintain your position gets you expelled - where's the consistency in that?
I think it was a sham and disgrace. Bad news for Cav too.
Today looks bumpy. According to LA this route is the only time he saw the Big Mig on the ropes. That said, where was it that Indurain blew big time. A proper mountain stage rather than a bumpy one I think.
Onwards
Chapeau Christophe Riblon - that was one hard way to win a bike race! He deserved not get to caught. More messing about by Andy and Alberto, and Denis will be in with a shout - Mr Menchov looked pretty strong today. This is turning out to be one heck of a Tour!
Onwards indeed!
Shame on you Alberto, you know you should NEVER attack the yellow jersey when he has a mechanical problem.
No chapeau to you Contador.
Not sure what Bert has said about it but I think he kicked and then was unsure what to do. And by that time Menchov and Sanchez were with him and there was a looming descent to deal with... Schleck did well to keep it as close as it still is. I still think he can take some time back on the final climb on Thursday. That could be enough. The Sastre managed to hold off Evans in the time trial a few years back. Lovely Tour so far.
I think this 'patron' business is taken a bit too far. I know its tradition and all that but plenty of bad luck befalls riders on the road, so why is it just the maillot jaune that gets the rub? Makes the wearer almost untouchable. If one of the contenders had suffered a similar fate, would his rivals (yellow jersey included) have waited? Only saying, like...
you know my take on the etiquette for dealing with the yellow jersey?
"Maillot jaune said keep close till Beaune
And don't head-butt me on the sprint..."
Weather's not looking good for the Tourmalet...
Bad enough to limit attacks? I hope not. This is potentially one of the biggest sporting days I we are ever likely to witness. And I'm not normally given to exage.. er egg.. d'oh hyperbole!
I come in and turn on and see some sheep crossing the road. What was good is how they didn't stop crossing for the peleton and just mingled/got in the way of it.
Too close to call, but magnificent to watch. At the end of the day, two tremendous athletes doing what they do best. Here's hoping Andy does the TT of his life and makes it even more interesting on Saturday. Hope you enjoy Sunday, Gideon.
How on earth could they see where they were going. Let alone move fast. Extraordinary. Should be quite some TT. Thanks Al. I'll try not to overdo it this time... Salut!
Interesting - see who cracks first, and neither did. If it's still this close after the TT, will they race on Sunday?
As for racing in the fog, I did a 24hr race at Spa a couple of years ago and it was foggy in the night. Good fun, if a bit lairy.
If the gap is small/tiny they may race on Sunday. But Cav will probably win a bunch sprint. Same times thereafter.... probably. However the TT could throw up a surprise. And a win for Fab. No surprise.
Schleck certainly gave it his best shot - another winter in the wind tunnel and he might have the beating of Contador. Fab didn't disappoint, but Menchov did a great ride in the wind. Cav to make it five for the year - and Ale-Jet to keep green. Another great Tour.
What a great end to the Tour. Looking side on at the sprint.
Where's Cavendish?
Oh..there he is speeding past everyone.
Just how fast is that guy and how unfair is it to his competition?
So here are the Tour de France 2010 lyrics to "Ivo"
Menchov
Sanchez
Armstrong
Contador
I'll write down the rest when I've learnt the words to the Spanish National Anthem*
*which doesn't have any words
