Q.9. Any song is massively improved by the inclusion of a reference to radio. Especially in the chorus. Discuss with examples (10 points))
eg
Radio - Teenage Fan Club
Stuck Between Stations - The Hold Steady
Road Runner - Modern Lovers
[NB: mention of Buggles gets you minus ten trillion points]
Buggles
Stay behind after class and write out the lyrics to The Replacement's "Left of the Dial" 100 times.
Buggle that!
'In The Days Before Rock And Roll' by Van the Man namechecks all those obscure markings on old radio sets - Hilvesum, Athlone etc.
"Wireless knobs" - Van M
"Radio free europe" - REM
"Radio radio" - D McManus
"Rock and roll radio" - Ramones
"Caravan" - Van M
P.S. Buggles
I got the title wrong. I thought it was called "Wireless knobs"
I suppose that makes me a bit of a wireless knob.
Oh buggle.
on the radio - regina spektor
good guys and bad guys - campervan beethoven
i like the fiddling for a radio station on the start of dream a little dream of me - the mamas and the papas.

That happens at the start of 'Tell Me There's A Heaven' by Chris Rea as well.
It is less good.
Radio Ga Ga - Treorchy Male Choir
Atmospherics: Listen To The radio - Tom Robinson
yesterday once more - the carpenters
There's that one by the Selecter - "On my ummm...three minute hero?"
In Ultravox's "Death in the Afternoon" they "heard the news", so it's a radio...
Is Harry Chapin's W.O.L.D. more encouraging than Mark Germino's Rex Bob Lowenstein?
I mentioned the Buggles on the Midlands thread, so I won't on this one...
FM (No Static At All) - Steely Dan
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
station to station - david bowie
transmission - joy division
mr. e's beautiful blues - eels (another fiddling about for a radio station)

"Radio Silence" - Thomas Dolby. Tis about Radio Caroline.
"Oh to paint her eyes so red and her lips so blue/ Carve her legend on the bow - Caroline four-five-two/ When they come to call for her I will be there too.../ Observe Radio Silence observe"
Of course, the whole of Kraftwerk's "Radio-Activity" is devoted to radio as well as electronics and radioactivity.
"Antenna" and "Airwaves" are musical and sound far less as though Ralf Hütter had just stuck the mike in front of the "Deutscher Kleinempfänger" wireless set whose back cover is depicted on the rear of the LP than "Radioland" or "News"...
soldier's things - tom waits
all this radio really needs is a fuse - my favourite so far.
Devil's radio - uncle Bobby Hitchcock
Just A Touch - r.e.m. also mentions radio
Oh Yeah - Roxy Music
Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club
R4 Shipping Forecast..
'And the radio says...
This Is A Low'
Elbow - Switching Off
"Early evening June, this room and a radio play"
(I think).
Radio Free Europe - REM
Radio, Radio - Elvis Costello
Radio Nowhere - Bruse Springsteen
'Wireless' by Cardiacs namechecks the eponymous cutting-edge communications technology.
And it's Lovely too!
(Although I must at this point admit that the words to it cover subject material that some might consider to verge on the margins of sad.)
I'd principally like to hear it in its full-length version, *with* the several minutes of scissor-based music kept in.
Not least because Somebody Else may then be able to remember the name of the 'very similar' piece that Mr. Riley-DJ played out on his show some time ago.
I have, like a numpty, completely forgotten the name of the band AND of the song.
In this, as in so much else, I need a grown-up to help me...
Has anyone mentioned Radio Song by REM?
brownsauce. Don't provoke me.
Mr. Radio - Electric Light Orchestra (begins with radio signal changing)
Radio Radio - Elvis Costello
My Baby's Got a Transistor Radio - Benny Hill
On The Radio - Joe Jackson
On The Air - Peter Gabriel
M Ward made an album about it - 'Transistor Radio'.
Radios In Motion - XTC
