Hello
One of the hours on Easter Monday will be dedicated to music from the English Midlands. East and West. And points in between
Suggestions here please... and feel free to quibble on the finer points of regional geography.
How about "Funky Moped" by Jasper Carrot.
Bruce Woolley from Shepshed wrote "Video Killed the Radio Star" or you could play something by his Camera Club without even having to think "Showaddywaddy".
Dexys - Plan B
Mott the Hoople - The road to Birmingham
Fun Boy Three - Our lips are sealed
Two out of three of Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Stourbridge Over Troubled Water Orton - Simon & Garfunkenilworth
Another Bickenhill In The Walsall - Penkridge Floyd
Anything by Sutton Coldplay, Charlotte Alvechurch, or Halesowen Paul.
What? - not puns?? Cobbelrs.
Midlands music eh? Bostin!
Given my moniker, it'd be rude of me *not* to ask for 'Paranoid', by Black Sabbath....
If that's just too obvious, 'Iron Man' or 'Supernaut' by them would be nice.
If you're trying to fill time (where're everybody else's suggestions? Slackers!), how about 'Kashmir' by Led Zep?
Clearly, it would be nice to get some suggestions from less ancient eras.
I like 'Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out' by Bentley Rhythm Ace (so shoot me!), and much of PWEI's product. 'PWEIsation' springs to mind, as does 'Get the girl, Kill the baddies'.
But - and I really must insist on this - I'd like to request that you play absolutely NOTHING whatsoever by Ocean Colour Scene. Because their smug-faced popular musical stylings ruined the good name of the Moseley district of Brummagen.
Sons of Birmingham, Mighty Mighty - 'I Never Imagined', from their Peel session, if it's available.
Bruce Woolley would be great - English Garden was a fab album and his band featured Thomas Dolby and Matthew Seligman. Most of them backed Bowie at Live Aid and Seligman then went on to join the Thompson Twins and the Soft Boys. Think Matthew is a londoner though.
ELO - has to be.
weren't the Bodines from the midlands somewhere?
Tindersticks! (East Midlands)
'Loughborough Suicide' by The Young Knives is about as East Midlands as it comes.
The best Midlands band Ever -- Broadcast -- must be played. Anything they did would be fantastic, but they actually mention Chelmsley Wood in their song 'Michael'.
Also:
Go-Kart Mozart's 'Mrs Back to Front and the Bull Ring Thing'
The Specials' 'Ghost Town'
Black Sabbath -- Although 'Paranoid' is a great song, 'Headless Cross' happens to be an area of Redditch. Hmm. But there must be some metal!
And I'm sure the East Midlands/ Warwickshire is name-checked in Julian Cope's 'Reynard the Fox'.
I'd suggest something by The Enemy, as they seem to sing of nothing but Coventry, but I don't like them enough to know what to pick (if anything).
But if it comes just to Bands from the Midlands: Wonderstuff, Editors, Selector, Beat, Napalm Death, All About Eve, THE PRIMITIVES (please!), Slade . . .
Prolapse were the best band in Leicester-much better than cornershop who were terrible live and Lazarus Clamp are probably the best midlands act now aside from MJ Hibbett and the Validators.
How about something by Fat Tulips.
But - and I really must insist on this - I'd like to request that you play absolutely NOTHING whatsoever by Ocean Colour Scene. Because their smug-faced popular musical stylings ruined the good name of the Moseley district of Brummagen.Β
Moseley's good name is maintained by its fine citizens Misty's Big Adventure though, so maybe room could be found for them. I'm sure The Hawk will second me on that.
Elvis was a hero to some ...
Never meant a God damn thing to me.
Peel liked him though.
Was he important in the evolution of the music we love? I really doubt it.
And now Charlie Gillett has passed.
QUIBBLE!
Julian Cope's Tamworth is quite definitely West Midlands. As defined by the A444.
Or by the counties Warks, Worcs, Staffs, Herefordshire & "Salop".
West Midlands:
ditto to Felt, PWEI (qv songs with megaphones) and ELO.
Is The Beat's"Stand Down Margaret" on the banned list yet?
Only joking, I'd have nominated "Too Nice To Talk To" anyway.
And Fuzz Townshend's "Bus".
And We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Going To Use It.
Which of course leads us to the Potteries and Reverend Ted Chippington.
In the interest of a Midlands coalition, I should like to nominate Terry & Gerry's cover of "Bias Binding".
And while we are on the subject of Leicester's Yeah Yeah Noh, let's move to the East Midlands for something from their Peel Sessions.
How about some Anne Briggs for Notts County?
Ending up at the party (as she might say) of The Bauhaus from Northampton, home of Alan Moore and Alan Carr.
Anything by Pop Will Eat Itself or Slade.
I would like to hear a bit of 'This is Seb Clarke' from Stoke-On-Trent. Brilliant local band supported by many of us around the potteries!! and if these don't get shared on the midlands hour I would be very disappointed! Their latest single is due for release on the 12th April so would love to hear it get played!
I'd like something by The Move, at the moment I'm partial to "Useless Information" and "Curly". Curly is about people in Liverpool so might not be appropriate. Can't beat Fire Brigade either but that gets quite a few plays. Still, you can't beat it, I sometimes just play it over and over on my ipod.
Oooh yes, Prolapse would be marvellous, and Mrs Spud would love a bit of Northampton's finest....The Jazz Butcher. Not really, Bauhaus
Re Suggestions for Midlands based bands - would like to nominate Birmingham band Au Pairs. Although I have both "Playing With A Different Sex" and "Sense and Sensuality" on vinyl, it wasn't until a friend bought me the CD "Stepping Out Of Line - The Anthology" a couple of years ago that I learned more about them from the accompanying literature.
I remember them playing on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the early eighties, but hadn't realised that they had agreed, at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's request, not to include the politically sensitive track "Armagh", but, knowing it was live, did so anyway. I cannot imagine a band willing to risk their future making such a political point now! (according to Wikipedia, the singer, Lesley Wood is now a lawyer!)
I also learned from the info on this CD that with regards to bass player Jane Munro's style, according to guitarist Paul Foad, that "the reggae guys in Birmingham used to check her out."
Have always really loved their track "Headache For Michelle" - which might also be applicable regarding the 'dissing drugs' thread as well as it contains the lyric "Malcolm Is Dead - He Got Out Of His Head?"

How could I forget Bauhaus?
I love 'Dark Entries', and the full-length version of 'Spirit' that's on 'The Sky's Gone Out' (the one that segues in to 'We Love Our Audience').
Another band I forgot (like a numpty) is the Specials.
I'm quite partial to some of their less 'obvious' songs, such as 'Friday Night, Saturday Morning', and 'What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend', but I'll be happy if you play 'Ghost Town' (even though it now always makes me think of a Craggy Island disco night).
Oo, yes to hearing a bit of Julian Cope, Young Knives and Au Pairs (Obviously..),
And can this also by an excuse to play Black Country Girl by Spear of Destiny, yeah they're not from the area, but how many songs have Black Country in the title?
It would be good to hear something from the session Young Knives did for Marc Riley a couple of years back.
Also, 'Friday Night in Loughborough' by The Wave Pictures. How many other songs mention the Leicester Mercury?
That's the Way - Led Zep
Niteklubbing - The Specials
Sabra Cadabra - Black Sab
Far Far Away - Slade
10538 Overture - ELO
job done
Pretty much anything by the local 2-Toners (but the Beat 'Save It For Later' is especially great)
Boltthrower? (John Peel's tale of driving his family along the French Riviera with the 'Thrower blasting from their open-top car is an image to treasure!)
On a more retro tip, The Move must surely be included. The big chart hits were all great, but I'd vote for a less well-known gem such as 'Looking On', perhaps?
Oh, and one of Slade's slower songs (Far Far Away?) would also be good!
Sorry, just one more - I don't think anyone's nominated Steel Pulse as yet? Their excellent (and regionally-titled) 'Handsworth Revolution' LP must surely be a worthy contender!
A bit of Pram!
Lovely stuff- cheers Gid.
just listening on the i-player; excellent stuff of 1969
Just for info, Steel Pulse and Prolapse will feature on Weds or Thursday.
what about six by seven, or a bit of alvin lee? all good nottinghamshire lads.
also a great unsigned nottingham lot called madison scouts. www.myspace.com/madisonscoutsuk (my mates obviously)
He did some Six By Seven - check the iplayer & tracklist.
