Comment on the proposal to shut down 6Music, as Gid has been telling us, at

(I see no other thread about this).

Whatever else you do you MUST contact the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust who will consider the proposal. Petitions and Facebook (spellcheck: Facetious) groups are all very well but you MUST do this.

As Gid has mentioned, you can also send your response by email to srconsultation AT bbc.co.uk

    or download this,

complete, and send by post to:

    Strategy Review Consultation
    Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust
    180 Great Portland Street
    London W1W 5QZ

(NB Mods - I have copied these Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ links from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust website).

Be warned that the questionnaire takes an inordinate amount of time, (Well, it does ask "what do you like about the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ", "what would you change?" and "So what do you think about closing 6Music down?"). It took me from 8.30am to 3.00pm today without a break, because I was considering everything in detail.

To avoid issues with computer crashes and the fact I did not get a download of a PDF copy of my response as promised, I suggest you look at those questions and write my answer out in a word processor.

    Points:

    1) The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's website is one of the named areas under threat. So we're OK here then...smiley - doh your response must say how beautiful Peta is looking with her tan... smiley - winkeye and that these MBs must stay!!

    2) The publicly-given logic for axing 6Music is that it is a "pop" station like 1, 2 and 1xtra. Our responses must contradict that. Use your own words based on my example, if you like:

"It is clear that to call 6Music a "pop" station (practically indistinguishable from Radios 1 and 2) is to misunderstand the space which 6Music occupies. The Conservative Shadow Minister for Culture, Ed Vaizey, actually listened to 6Music for the first time recently and recognised this.

The music played by 6Music ("post-1960 commercial music such as rock, pop, indie, punk, new wave and new music etc.") has little overlap with Radios 1 and 2. In particular, the commercial sector has no interest in playing the variety and diversity of tracks played on 6music due to the unlikelihood, or just the uncertainty, of attracting advertising revenue; in fact the service currently provided by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 6Music must continue. When a commercial radio station ("xfm") began in this space following the closure of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ GLR, it was soon refocused on only a very limited number of commercial tracks.

To quote singer and 6music DJ Cerys Matthews: [Daily Telegraph, Sat]

"6 Music is almost the definition of public service broadcasting:
a channel that encourages innovation in an area of importance both culturally and commercially, and that would not be broadcast elsewhere if the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ didn’t do it. "

The position of this cost minnow (0.2% of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's budget) 6music is widely misunderstood. 6Music is actually like Radio 3, performing a valuable, quality, public service rΓ΄le which could be covered neither by Radios 1/2 nor by the commercial sector, just as no-one could suggest that Classic FM is an exact alternative to Radio 3.

The London commercial station xfm began as a very experimental station, but was soon dumbed down to become far more mainstream with a tiny, but rigorously-enforced, playlist and, latterly, a sort of "computerised juke box" concept whereas 6Music features knowledgeable, approachable DJs in a Reithian mode.

In short, 6Music must remain open at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to guarantee quality music broadcasting."

I am actually indebted to a poster on Facespace (other S&N sites are available like Mylovelybook) for part of the wording about Radio 3/6Music which encapsulated exactly what I was thinking.

I feel another rant coming on.

Meanwhile, get out there and click some link!

Worth 'bumping' (I think that's what the under 37s call it) this thread. Love Gideon? Love 6Music? Then take 5 minutes of your time to tell the trust what you think. Once you've done that, how about a trip to old London Town on the 27th March to join in the carnival/protest.

You'll easily find details on the interweb if you type '6Music', 'Save' and 'Protest' into one of the many quite-good webular browers. As Tolhurst says Phace-book is good starting point for all the latest campaign news.

    Hello everybody.

I think there are so many of these threads, just react to one of them! Make it this one!

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust is very definitely one - I think THE* - place you should go if you want to save 6music.

*AFAIK they have to approve the strategy set out by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ managemernt. So they can still veto or alter it.

I wanted to share with you just how long it took. Although it is a "piece of string" thing you will presumably need at least an hour.

Whatever you do, keep your answers pertinent and polite... (several of the questions are multipart and very wide-ranging, so you will need to structure your answer, the best way is on the computer)...

Also note that you should *complain* to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ about the proposed axing of 6Music (if you believe it would sacrifice a gem of quality at a tiny saving) as someone is counting complaints as a measure of reaction, and only 8,000 were received by last night.

    Takes 10 minutes.

But register your views with the Trust too!
