Please fight to save 6 music. I love and admire the station and am committed to listening( with the exception of 2 daytime presenters). There is a desperate need for Indie and quirky on the airwaves with intelligent presentation which is not available elsewhere. The station does not cost much to run and is irreplaceable. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, save money some where else and promote this station more to increase audience visibility which will inevitably increase listener numbers
Please join this group and sign the petition it takes less than 30 seconds and it could make a change. Pass this invite on to all your friends.
Already on it - love this station especially DJ's like Mr Coe who I listen to each day he's on air.
This is very bad news. Has any one seen any data to justify this i.e. comparative costs of channel operation versus audience numbers. Why 6Music and not Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 7 or 1 xtra or Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TV Channels 3 and to a lesser extent Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 4 (although this does occasionally have good stuff on it Mad Men, Music documentaries.
Bugger Facebook - take to the streets!!!!
I'm thinking of joining facespace or whatever it's called. But I don't want to give anything away about the family of aardvarks in my shed.
Any tips?
I did weaken a year ago and join up to facebook, but closed the account half an hour later. I couldnt go through with it but for no such fantastic reason as having a family of aardvarks in my shed-Oh if only. Do they enjoy 6?
Nighttime saviour gideon coe cannot be lost from our dabs. It's unthinkable...but I cant stop thinking about it for now...
The aardvarks were meant to be a secret but I fear their little snouts are out in the open now.
That's precisely the sort of issue I have heard you get with facespace, though I have some ideas I would like to share which are not suitable for the MBs (not because they are rude!) and we have no way of contacting each other otherwise.
This being 6Music, I am sure people here could suggest lots of South African acts I could play for my aardvarks.
Just thought of "Ladysmith Black Mombaza" (sp?) - phew that's a relief!
I did have the DAB radio in the shed one Saturday dinnertime, and they rather liked Auntie Liz...
From what I can see annual service budget for 6Music is Β£6m ('Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 6Music Service Licence 7 April 2008) so it is like sacking the tea lady.
Mkt share is low at .4% (mediauk.com) but it grew 33.3% in last year alone as did listening hours up 19.5%.and continues steady annual increase since its inception in 2003.
Facebook group to join is Save Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 6 Music over 60,000 and growing
Tolhurst - join FB and just don't put any info on for people to see. You can block any unwanted people seeing the aardvarks
Join us on Save 6 Music - we're all there!

I don't care if I get banned, this needs saying.
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ are paid by us to provide a public broadcasting service to the licence fee payers. They are not publicly funded to indulge in ratings wars with ITV.
If 6Music is axed Mark Thompson is a disgrace. This station supports and promotes new music in this country and is very important part of UK culture. This is exactly what the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ should be providing. Not endless celebrity drivel.
I have written to Margaret Hodge, the Culture minister and have put forward a few campaign ideas.
In the meantime. Support 6Music. We love yer Gideon.
I'm thinking of joining facespace or whatever it's called. But I don't want to give anything away about the family of aardvarks in my shed. doh
Any tips?Β
For reasons I won't go into here, I had to close my previous 'real' Farcebroke account, and make a new one with a 'fake' name. This happened just as Farcebroke changed what you could hide from other people. If you don't want anybody to know anything about you, then they won't.
For the record, I only joined Farcebroke because of the 6M campaign, anyway.

But Freak Scene does belong to the Aardvark Appreciation Society - I've seen his wall!
Do I know you?
I would be genuinely devastated if this station was axed. Whee is can you hear new talent and independant music. This station provides a service in playing music for the music love, not selling euro pop. Please please do not axe it, there is no alternative.

Laura - join the FB group - Save 6 Music and also write to the Trust telling them why 6 Music should stay and why it's different to anything else on air.
The Trust needs to know from the paying public why the station should be kept.

Perhaps the listening figures would increase dramatically if it were moved to F.M. WITHOUT COMPRESSION !
I would not listen to anything on D.A.B. too poor quality sound.
if only there were someone merging duplicate threads. At least on Gid's board the most recent thread goes to the top, but here, there are two threads about the future of 6Music, and I make it a massive SEVENTEEN threads on "Inside 6Music", so that by tomorrow the first announcement will have fallen off the front page...
Don't worry Tolhurst. There'll be another one along any minute
6music is the best thing i've heard since discovering Peel & Walters in the early 80's.
Why not cut some executive/'star' salaries instead?
Is there an alternative to Mystupidfaceplace, I have a dislike for those places, as much as I am against the closure of 6Music, I will not go there.
Anyone got an alternative, simple petition that can be signed?
Simple petition, no need for stupidfaceplaces.
Oh dear, I have never heard of Absolute radio before today, I live abroad, but having just given it a quick listen I don't see this as a good idea.

It is terrible news, and bloody typical of the short sighted nature of those in charge everywhere. we'd rather pay the likes of Jonathan Ross who is such a bad role model than people who enhance the air waves.
So long as we save some money to pay Michael Portillo to live with poor people for a week
I love Gideon's show. Hopefully he'd be still on somewhere even the Absolute version of R6 would do.
I Wouldn't mind not bothering with TV and not paying the licence fee - they can stuff 'Strictly Come dancing 'and all the other crap they seem to think is 'Quality' broadcasting. Or perhaps cut back on the 14 million spent on taxis!

Well this message board wont be here after 6Music closes so use mine:
I've left a message on petition.fm. It reallt bugs me they're doing this after so much money's been spent on the Winter Olympics.
Simple non-Facebook petition
Closing 6Music goes directly against the stated aim of quality not quantity. 6Music could not possibly survive unharmed as a commercial station. Listening figures don't tell all. This isn't your standard sonic wallpaper station just on in the background, and best left to commercial stations. Most listeners to 6Music actually listen, as there are often genuine surprises that go on to help form their musical taste - John Peel would be proud. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ never really understood what they had in him till he'd gone. Radio 1 endlessly jingles 'in new music we trust', while 6Music just quietly gets on with the job of playing it as a given.
The small audience is partly a function of the bungled experiment that is DAB. Put 6Music on FM too, I suspect your figures would leap. How many people have DAB radios in their vehicles? It's not perfect, but Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, listen to the clamour and improve it. You've got enough feedback to last a lifetime now. Think how much you've saved on opinion polls!
Just sign up as an aardvark and then all you've got to worry about is revealing the person in the big shed.
6 music is the reason I bought a dab radio in the first place. And then another (portable) one.....
well, on the one hand I'm a bit gobsmacked by "look at the language on that" syndrome from the other place.
On the other, I've had a post removed here for not being in English. I can't be bothered to sift through the musical pun threads to see what's missing.
At least I now know the Shadow "Culture" Secretary believes 6Music will stay!
It's reached the ears of El Reg, too....
I deny ANY involvement with placing that ed vaizey story in the Guardian. Understood?
It's great if people sign that petition, but what the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ really pay attention to is complaints via this form:
You don't have to be eloquent - it's a numbers game now. It takes 5 minutes.
COMPLAIN! WRITE! PROTEST!
Or in a few months time you'll be chosing between Fearne Cotton, Ken Bruce and Absolute. Just think about an eternity of THAT vs 5 minutes now to click on that link and tell them this is a dumb idea....
"I want to complain about the licence fee. It's far too low! It should be Β£400!"
this from Not The Nine O'Clock News on YouTube, poster mobilecheese.
I note at the time that the licence fee was Β£32!
Thanks for the link I sent this, it's great that you can tell them you wants to see a reply
"I am very disappointed in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ today. There has been murmuring of
Radio 6 Music being closed, then some news reports that the proposed
closure was being reconsidered due to the outpouring of support from
people who value the station.
Now I hear that the decision to close 6 Music has been made.
In my opinion the diverse nature of the services that the bbc offers
is the sole justification of the license fee. Attempt to attract the
majority to view or listen to the bbc programming has it's place but
there are people out there, myself included, that cannot be bothered
with watching or listening to stuff just because everyone else is. I
want to explore media and broadcasting for programming that I
genuinely enjoy regardless of what other people think. 6 Music was
one such station that when I had time to listen to properly,
difficult when it was only available digitally, I could undertake
such exploration.
That is how its closure will affect me.
What about it's impact on the creative development of the population
of our country? How encouraging it must be for a musician to be
picked up on by someone who can get a track played on the radio, to
be told when to tune in, to hear a DJ enthuse about the track and
then reap the response from people who listened to the track and
liked it enough to get in touch via sites like myspace. This will
obviously still go on but I fear with the removal of 6Music there
will be more musicians that will go unnoticed.
Any way that is the opinion of thus license payer and I'm sure that
I am not alone."
Surely it would make better sense to axe Radio 3, as its seems to serve no purpose, compared to the wider listening population.
Good new music needs a home and that's 6 Music.
If the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ wishes to meet its charter, they should listen to the people, maintain innovation and cut out the 'deadwood'..........
Bye bye Radio 3!!
6 Music should be saved by the axe. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ cost cutting excercise doesn't happen over night. Looking at the proposals Mark Thomspon has suggested ( They are proposals ) it has to pass the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ trust & I'm guessing media & culture secretary office in Government first. It does also look like a manifesto just before a General Election.
I think with pressure on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Board & Thompson hopefully there will be a change of heart.
Getting rid of things like 6 Music will be hard to scrap back, and could ruin the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ in a long run.
Have you all shared your thoughts with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust? They have the final say on these proposed cuts. And they probably aren't reading this board.
That site is undergoing extreme delays this afternoon due to the volume of hits. There is a MASSIVE backlash against the 6music closure - so it's really worth adding your voice and PUSHING BACK.
PUSH BACK!
I agree wholeheartedly. Please save money elsewhere Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. 6 music is so precious to its listeners and will be such a loss. I'm not ready for radio 2 all day every day, and cannot cope with radio 1. The programmes are so unique and fit my niche between radios 1 and 2. What will I do without my daily dose of steve lamacq?
It's an appalling decision. 6 is a quirky station playing quality music.
My son & D-in-L have it on their DAB all the time, (so I often have to tell them off for being unaware of what is going on in the world!)They don't watch TV.
I listen to it most afternoons. Radio 4's afternoon programming is poor until 4.00pm and R1 & 2 are not for me.
Son & wife are 30, I am 62. We all like GOOD music, and this is the only place we find it.
Hang the report on its own principles
6 Music is what the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ used to do when I was a teenager getting in to music: it's a taster package, with DJs acting as your cooler big brother or cousin, showing you something he thinks you'll like but in no way forcing it on you. It must not be allowed to founder on the rocks of political and commercial interference.
I agree with what someone wrote a bit earlier, how can the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ justify axeing 6music ahead of Radio 7, 1 extra, 5 extra ? [Personal details removed by Moderator]
It just doesn't make sense.
Protest
Spread the Word
Complain here. Tell those in power exactly how you feel.
I am incensed that 6 Music is to be axed, in my view it is the only station in the UK remotely worth listening to for is diversity and uniqueness. If is goes, its just another sign of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ dumbing down in order to cater for mass market appeal! Call me naive but doesn't the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ mandate include catering for all sections of the community?
I now hear that there will be three months until the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust make a decision, meanwhile there are over 90,000 people (and AFAIK no aardvarks) in a FaceSpace group,
Click here to do an on-line consultation (will the *B*BC allow you to be British?)
or you can make your voice heard by sending an e-mail to
" trust dot enquiries "at" bbc.co.uk "
(I'm not sure I can post an e-mail address, even an official Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ one to support saving 6Music!)
what is the point of 1 extra? Is radio 1 just being greedy? Why do they need an extra station? what about the alternative music listeners? John Peel would be turning in his grave...FACT

what is the point of 1 extra?

Good question.
I can't believe this is happening. This is the only credible music station on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. We listen to 6 every day.
Mark Thompson has just struggled with that under Paxman's questioning. Tim Westwood's quote about broadcasting to no-one was raised.
