Why does no-one ever release eponymous albums anymore?
I'm changing my name by deed poll to "Greatest Hits" and I'm going to sue the _rse off Universal Records.
Wilco (the album).
I agree, although R.E.M did release an album called Eponymous.
Every Weezer album too? No?
Why does no-one ever release eponymous albums anymore?Β
because, according to 6Music, they're too busy making "self-titled" ones, that's why! (I'm convinced that doesn't actually mean the same thing!)
Recentish examples.
Bob Dylan... okay 48 years ago or so
The Clash... mmm work it out.. I make it 33
Elvis Presley.. more than both of the above
Then there's Chicago...who's naming of albums ranks as the least imaginative/most simple in recorded music history. As for the music therein..
The Collins has filled in splendidly by all accounts and no surprise there. In Larry Sanders terms he is more "bloke from Waynes World" than "Bobcat".
Which is how it should be
x
The only recent example that springs readily to mind is The XX's debut album.
However, on closer inspection that has to be disqualified as they're called "The XX" whilst their album is called "XX", so that one doesn't count... in my book.
Having just checked my recent(ish) purchases, I have come across "Monsters of Folk" by the Monsters of Folk. So there's at least one from last year. Any more?
Fever Ray
Glasvegas
Friendly Fires
Fleet Foxes
I'm a fan of the semi-eponymous album title, eg.
The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads
Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd
Who's Next
Oooh, nicely played Roof_dog!
I'm a big fan of the self-referential statement. I once read a whole book about them.
In case you're wondering, this is a self-referential statement.
Yes, that one. ^^^^^
There are a fair few self-referential songs out there too: eg "This is not a love song".
The first rule of Tautology Club is the first rule of Tautology Club.
Chortle!
[Goes to look up meaning of the word "Tautology"].
Belated chortle!
"The second rule of LSD: the roof is not a good place to be" - Jeffrey Lewis - The late time I took Acid I went Insane. (*)
Anyone know a third rule?
*Don't do it kids! No, really, don't. Really.
[Shudders. Does 1000-yard stare]
I'm thinking pensively of launching as founder a "Club Organisation for the Redundant Pleonasm"...
field music - field music ...!
John Foxx was being interviewed on Centre Radio 238 in 1979 or 1980 and was asked why his solo album "Metamatic" included the track off his last Ultravox album, "Systems of Romance".
Patiently, John explained to the interviewer that the album had contained no eponymous(?) track...

That's a bit like the Elvis Costello song 'Almost Blue' featuring on the Elvis Costello album... 'Imperial Bedroom'.
No, it's all gone a bit like Matrix Reloaded now.
Where is the alka-seltza? "Plunk Plink - Every Drink!"

Don't worry I'm sure Jeff Buckley's Mum will be along soon with another clutch of out-takes and live versions of Grace all in a different order.
