Hello Gid.
The only thing we know about the date of the general election is that it will definitely be on a Thursday, and so you'll be on air. Any thoughts about doing an election night special?
What guidelines do broadcasters operate under, on Election Night?

Don't talk about politics until 10 when the polls close.
Don't talk about politics while the counts are in progress.
Normal show, then

You have to roam around the Inside 6 Music MB to find out where this is heading.
But it's a good direction and I agree with it!
I'm sure you can talk about politics while the counts are in progress - once the polls are closed you couldn't be seen as influencing the audience one way or the other. After all, that's when the dimblebies are awoken from their cardboard boxes of straw and start pontificating about all and sundry.
I have given the matter some thought.
And I concluded that I'd best leave it alone.
The Non-Election Election Night Musical Extravaganza anyone?
Pity, it could have been fun...
None of the Above
Elected
Won't Get Fooled Again
What's Going On
The Same Old Song
I'll Do Anything
Liar
Disappointed
Stuck in the Middle with You
etc
...but, you're probably right, Gid.
Gordon Brown (finer temptress)
Hooray! All of a sudden it's a Political Puns in Song thread!
Please note that, in a political punning thread, all major parties should have equal representation.
Here are a some suggestions for the party faithfuls to chant at their leaders.
The Cameron never lies
Never a frown, with Gordon Brown
There's Nick the Clegg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um

And a few presenters:
"Paxman" - The Beatles
"Marr, he's making eyes at me"
"(Kirsty) Wark on the wild side"
"Where will the baby's Dimble-by"

Well, House of Lords is actually the guitarist in the Young Knives.
Gerry-mandering and the Pacemakers.
Commons People.
Black Rod Motorcycle Club.

It's shame this isn't going to happen - Nice and Sleazy would have been the perfect opening record.
You spin me right round

It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swingometer.
Songs in the Key Marginal of Life
The Divison Bell
Whip it!
Burning Down The House
David Denies (Til Tuesday) - could be Dimbleby, could be Cameron
Boys Keep Swinging (David Bowie) - for the Swingometer
Every Day I Have To Cry Some (Dusty Springfield) - for Alistair Campbell on the Andrew Marr show.
Politics by Girls At Our Best
(I am awaiting this CD from a reputable record label from Brentford)
Elected by Alice Cooper
Young Conservatives by Peter Coyle once of The Lotus Eaters
And of course something by Parliament.
Margaret on the Guillotine (bit dated, I know....) - Morrissey
An MP Speaks (but only to justify his expenses claims...) - McCarthy
All these suggestions lead me to think that we could do a Politics Hour on another, less sensitive occasion.
So, not the the state opening of Parliament. Perhaps to celebrate the debating of Private Members Bills.
I'd like to see Private Members Bills incorporated into this thread but I'm at a loss as to how.
Back now, the Collins is doing splendidly by all accounts.
Better go as the Cat's just been ill over one of the playmobil knights
The closest I can get is:
"Baby baby baby, you can have my private member".
Michael Michael (Dory Previn) - in memory of Michael Foot (see also Adam & Joe's 'ball ball ball/Footy Footy Footy' song)
Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley) - for the infamous David Cameron poster with 'we can't go on like this' on!
Bills, Bills, Bills - Destiny's Child!
This House Is Haunted by Your Last Goodbye - Marc Almond
Trouser Press - Bonzos (yes, I was singing that during the bit about the trouser press on the drama 'On Expenses'!)
Mr. Speaker Gets the Word :p
Mandy... maybe not
Sweet Jean Vincent (Cable)...

Hey Gid - good to have you back at night - although were great in the mornings as well. Do you have limitless talent? And could you please pop on a bit of Scott Walker when you get a chance?
To remain on topic - this fits...
Cheers,
John
No Matter Who You Vote For, the Government Always Gets In (Bonzos)
Don't Worry About The Government (Talking Heads)
Hello,
So, a normal show I reckon. Those who are listening live clearly want escape from whatever is going elsewhere. Or they can't bear to be away from the programme for one second.
I'll go for the former. And those listening "again" will, I think be seeking similar escape.
So, I present (or I intend to) the Election Night Non Election special. I think I'll play some long records. Not least so I can play the closing tune on the new Phosphorescent album which is wonderful.
Feel free to add some further requests here. See what we can do.
Gidx
I would love some Meursault, Gideon...'William Henry Miller Pt. 1' if you have it.
Although I'd settle for some Mitchell Museum, Fanfarlo or the theme from Midnight Cowboy.
Ack ack ack!
Escapism indeed... we need the perfect antidote to Mr Cameron's smug face all over our screens. Although I am tempted to watch at about 10.45 to see if Sunderland South consistency have beaten their previous record for the fastest vote count. Gripping stuff.
The title track from Queen Of Denmark by John Grant, please. Just about the most perfect record I'll hear until the new Teenage Fanclub comes out.
I'll save you a job - the title track is profanity-laden. Any other will do
Whoever wins on Thurs, we should put the knife into it.
ie Genesis - The Knife
Yep, poor link but a great song, almost 9 mins too.
Topsy

Obviously the election is still on, so will there be another election show tonight, unless we have a government by then?
In The (Holby) City - The Jam (for Holby City being cancelled to make way for coverage of Gordon Brown leaving No. 10)
