Here's a thought - how about a show culled from live albums?
For example:-
Kicking Television - Wilco
David Live - David Bowie
Final Flame - That Petrol Emotion
Okonosos - My Morning Jacket
At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
Glitter and Doom - Tom Waits
Frampton Comes Alive!
Good idea though.
Lou Reed - Take No Prisoners or The VU Live.
Genesis Live!
The Cramps - Smell of female (tho i've been told this isnt really a live album)
The Seeds - Come Alive (ditto)...
Mott The Hoople - Live... (obviously - from Broadway shows 74?).
Smell Of Female not a live album!? How come??

The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads (way better than 'Stop Making Sense' IMO)
Live At Leeds of course.
Robyn Hitchcock - anything from 'gotta let this hen out' or 'storefront hitchcock', both of which i attended the recording of.
does it have to be a live album? for a one-off track, r.e.m. 'time after time, etc' is wonderful. Stipe and Buck playing 'time after time' until MS launches into 'red rain' only stopped when PB starts playing 'southern central rain (i'm sorry)'.
Jellyfish REflector - Guided by Voices
The Living End - Husker Du
The joke is always on us sometimes - Sugar (it was a bonus disc on the Besides cd)
Bob Mould also has a few live albums....There are a few on WIshing WEll, and there is also 'Live dog 1998'
And there is that Wilco Live album too!
Actually there are a couple of other live GBV albums, but the above one is probably the best.

Stop Making Sense actually sounds like it was recorded live in front of a real audience though. Whereas TNOTBITH sounds like it was recorded in the studio with the audience noise tacked on for effect. Sort of.
Else Neil Young's Live Rust, if only for the "When get big I'm gonna get an electric guitar. When I get real big!" just before he launches into My My, Hey Hey (the blue one) ...
Heaven.

SMS was primarily a movie though so maybe they wanted more audience atmosphere. I should dig out the DVD and watch it again. Been a long time. The album 'is' great, especially 'Slippery People', but I love the basic four-piece sound on (what used to be disc one of)TNOTBITH, and the later shows (disc 2) blow me away due to Adrian Belew on guitar.
All top stuff though.
Something from "Live in concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra" by Procol Harum. The version of "Conquistador" is terrific - Gary Brooker on great form.

'Live At Raji's' by The Dream Syndicate is a great album also.
It's Alive - The Ramones
Live at the Counter Eurovision - Misty in Roots
Bootleg series 4, 5 & 6 - Bob Dylan
Live and Direct - Aswad
Nighthawks At The Diner - Tom Waits
The Last Waltz - The Band
Live at the Apollo - James Brown
The Doors - 'Alive she Cried' - and their pre-gig soundcheck version of Gloria.
Joni Mitchell - "Miles of Aisles".
Hemndrix - "Live at Monetery" [sp?]
The Woodstock album too.

The Blow Up and Live at the Old Waldorf - Televison
What about "I've Been Loving You Too Long" or in fact anything from the live album that was part of the recent repackaged and reissued "Otis Blue" by Otis Redding?
Maundy Thursday (April 1st) is when we'll do this so please add some more suggestions.
Has anyone suggested the live version of Freebird yet?
Not sure if it was an album or an EP, but a favourite of mine back in student times was 'Concert' by The Cure. The version of 'A Forest' far superior to the studio recording with biscuit-tin lid cymbals.
aye, ok. stick me down for free bird.
amid the gloom, i seem to mind reference being made to a new bun, i mean pun thread. just me, or are my ears going the way of my eyes?

Some great suggestions here. But I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the greatest live album of all, Thin Lizzy's 'Live & Dangerous'. I would suggest play-listing 'Emerald', complete with lovably sexist cheesy intro:
"Is there anybody here with any Irish in them?"
"Are there any of the girls who'd like a little more Irish in them?"
Only Lynott could get away with that!

Another few thoughts:
Sensational Alex Harvey Band Live - one the greatest live albums ever imho
Galaxie 500 - Copenhagen - particulary given the recent re-releases
The Only Ones - The Big Sleep (Miles from Nowhere?) intro to As My Wife Says - I got married about 10 years ago...wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Robert Wyatt - Live at Drury Lane
Marianne Faithful - Blazing Away
Kraftwerk - Maximum Minimum
And plenty of Zappa and The Fall live albums to take a pick from.
How about something off the first half of "The Twilight Sad Killed My Parents and Hit the Road", recorded live at the ABC in Glasgow. Unfortunately the best song on the album (imo), the alternate version of "The Room" (called "Untitled#27" on the album) wasn't a live recording. Ah well, their cover of Joy Division's "Twenty four hours" is pretty splendid.
Just because I have just converted it from vinyl to digital last week Stupidity by Dr Feelgood.
Not only a good live album but but arguably their best album of any sort.
Glitter and Doom - Tom WaitsΜύ
Nighthawks for me.
And one no one will have heard of:
Cian Nugent - Childhood, Christian Lies and Slaughter.
Glad to see my favourites have already been mentioned (thanks jasonparkes and hank plankton), so just giving them a 'bump' in this frenetic lobbying process:
- Fragments of a Rainy Season by John Cale
- It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison
In the Great Talking Heads Debate, I'm also on the side of The Name of this Band is....
If you're looking for wild cards:
- Made in Europe by Deep Purple (great testosterone-fuelled drama in the first 65 seconds; pretty turgid after that from what I remember)
- Arc by Neil Young (keeping with the theme of albums namechecked in Half Man Half Biscuit songs, Look Dad, No Tunes has "I bet he listens to Arc a lot")
- Robyn Sings by Robyn Hitchcock (a partial remake of Dylan's "Albert Hall" concert, which turns out *better* than the original)

Good Morning Gid.
Live album night is right up my alley, problem is me and my mate will be driving to wales (caravan not cottage) for a two night getaway from the kids to remenice(?) about when we used to be in a band together, take things, drink things, fall off our bikes (he still does, sadly) and play the odd Pagan wedding...if you haven't then I would recommend it...mushy brew on the bar instead of a bar tab, married at midnight by a wizard etc...I digress.
I LOVE live albums and here are some of my faves that I'd love you to consider.
1. Free live album with The Cult's Dreamtime...in particular God's Zoo ("spoonies!")
2. Since I've been Loving You from Song Remains The Same...that guitar intro has cut me to shreds on many an occasion.
3. Johnsburg Illinois from Big Time (tom waits)
4. Anything from Live After Death by Iron Maiden!
5. Emma by Sisters of Mercy (on an ep I think)
6. Paper and Iron from XTC's Coat of Many Cupboards (cd2)
7. Torture Never Stops (in full please) from any live Zappa album
....I'll stop there as I know you are a busy man, as is your studio right-hand-man/lady.
Keep up the great work and let's hope six lives as long as music itself. Long live the Gidster.
Ged from Liverpool.
many thanks for the live album night. excellent show. well done everyone. let's do it again, pretty sometime soon, x
I think we'll have too. Three hours nowhere near enough. Have a good weekend all. x
Listening now, and hearing 'A Forest' from 'Concert' for the first time in way too long.
Many thanks. Happy Eggyness.
