The start of another year must herald the start of another (largely pathetic) attempt (mostly by me) to drum-up interest and enthusiasm for another Gid-fest!
On Saturday the 14th of August 2010, we, the privileged few will gather to discuss life, music and the potential ambiguity of the answer to question 14 as part of what has become known as "Gid-fest". There will be quizzes and prizes and beers and chat and findings of new friends and the like. No-one will leave the venue feeling worse than when they arrived GUARANTEED*.
More than likely we will once again hole up in the Victoria public house in Bayswater, (that London), and the timings are likely to be from 12pm onwards. I personally shall be travelling quite some distance at my own expense to make it there for the big(ish) day, so let's not hear any dissent in the ranks about it being held "down South", or in a different country, especially from those of you overseas! Requiring a visa to visit the UK will not be acceptable justification for non-attendance.
Any-hoo, plenty of notice for you all to work out good excuses for not joining the hardy few for whom this will be the third year in a row! I hope you will be able to join us if you're available. It's been a jolly good jape in all honesty and I wouldn't have missed either of the previous two for anything.
More to follow when I've worked it all out but until then please let me have any ideas, suggestions or thoughts so that we can make this a good old shin-dig.
The Facebook event can be also be found at;
Lee,
The Glorious North.
*The organisers can not guarantee anything whatsoever, especially the degree of pleasure and/or enjoyment that attendees may or may not accrue from the event itself. Investments may go down as well as up and you may get back less than you invested.
Investments may go down as well as up and you may get back less than you invested.Β
that's true, in modern political jargon things like "a pint" count as "an investment" - and the Hawk owes me a pint so I am currently a pint down on a financial deal, "out of pint and out of money" so to speak.
It would be great to get the Hawk to come along again. Or is that my financial advisebeer talking? And it would also be great if Gid could be there, we could otherwise rename it Hawk-fest...
Peta should come. And should you invite Elisabeth off the Guardian, or should we ensure she remains supportive and not freak her out?
I can't imagine that Elisabeth Mahoney would be easily freaked out!
I can't imagine that Elisabeth Mahoney would be easily freaked out!Β
not by Mohicans, safety pins and ripped binliners, maybe.
But what about sensible shoes, cardigans and badges with Gid's face on?
see my point?
I can see that might be a bit dodgy.
Right. Decision made.
This year's Gid-fest will require each attendee to bring along with them their favourite album of the last decade for the annual "Lucky Dip" thingy.
The rules are;
+ it must be in CD format
+ it must be gift wrapped
+ it must be a new, studio album (no re-issues or anthologies)
+ it must have been released between the 1st of January 2000 and the 31st of December 2009
Apart from those rules, it's all up to you and your unquestionably great tastes in music.
There'll be more updates to follow once I've confirmed what activities we'll be doing along with finally getting my backside into gear to actually book the venue.
Ooooh Lee, you're a right little drill sgt this year. So forceful!
Kinky!

Slightly perturbed that this thread has not had any additions for 4 weeks, will it still be occurring, will their be increased interest nearer the off, I'm keen to include it in my social diary but don't want to go end up going solo.
At least this will push it up to the top of the thread charts, that's great mate!
Don't do Facebook as I don't want the baliffs getting a picture of me can I suggest a Twitter page, Gid's down wiv the Twitter duffers.
can I suggest a Twitter pageΒ can suggest a little handwritten note tied with string to Button B in my nearest telephone kiosk?

It's because I haven't contributed to the thread yet.
I WILL BE ATTENDING.
There you go, that should start pulling 'em in.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.
Roofdog - You and I know, we definitely won't be needing a bigger boat.
The main reason there's been precious little activity on this thread over the past few weeks is to avoid annoying those fine ladies and gents who won't be attending or who have no interest in our little get together, (see - I'm the caring type).
Nearer the date, I'll let rip with update upon update until even those who are attending are board to tears with me.
I can confirm that the venue has been booked now and will be the Victoria public house in Bayswater, as it has been for the past two Gid-fests. My music quiz has so far not progressed beyond a title but I promise that by the next time I post on this thread, at least one question will have been writted... or at least the start of one question... or at least I'll have had an idea for the start of one question.
More updates will be forthcoming. This event is very much still going ahead and as it stands at the moment, we might even break the 20 person barrier for attendees. I'm so excited I could wee.

I'm so excited I could wee.Β
what a write-up!
I shall endeavour to attend. I have just ordered an appointments calendar as the 2010 Retro Beano Calendar has insufficient space for appointments...so I'll mark it in...
if there's no space in the boat, you could get me a little Lionel Jeffries laboratory raft like the one in Aguirre...
Can you only wee when excited, Lee? I think there's a whole chapter on you in Freud.

When you meet up, you'd better check his prostate for signs of enlargement. Best do this in the gents or, at the very least, in the public bar.
I was perfectly fine last year.
Sorry, mystipe
*It* was perfectly fine last year
Anyone who attended last year, or saw the photos, or worked on public transport that night, knows that I was very, very far from perfectly fine at last year's event.
Fisty- did you misbehave yourself?
I'm surprised
Gid fest - we might need to hire a marquee!
Now that's a thought - can we hammer tent pegs into the road?

Have you tried Marquee Smith (guaranteed not to Fall) - and I already have my coat, thanks.
Cyril - the nurse has misread the dose again.
What did the meals-on-wheels bring this week? Another 7 days of haddock?
In between a swanky wedding in Cornwall with a reception at Rick Stein's gaff and the Green Man Festival, I shall be there this year (although I did say that last year and the year before but this time it's different!).
Have you tried Marquee Smith (guaranteed not to Fall)
would that be a big change from the Victoria?
and would the people in the party be required to leave and join at ten-second intervals?
forgot the quotes! soz
I just wanted to remind folk that we haven't forgotten about Gid-fest this year and given the recent news, this year's event could be a great opportunity to meet up and celebrate... I hope.
Given what's gone on of late, I didn't want to distract anyone's attention from the more important work that many of us are involved in. However, I will post more details about the event once we get past the close of the consultation period.
Fight the power.

Well - we're almost past the bloody consultation period. May I suggest this gets a bit of publicity again? There are a number of people on other social networking emporiums wanting a summer mash up, of sorts. Perhaps a live musical element could be encouraged...

I'll have to send my apologies again this year - is it possible to choose a date that doesn't always fall on the excellent Summer Sundae Weekender in Leicester?
Perhaps a live musical element could be encouraged...Β
If we get more people than last year I promise to hum the theme tune to Howard's Way.
I will accompany you by drumming my forehead on the table.
Well, if you're not going to take this seriously!!!
Hello true believers.
Now that we've (hopefully) fought the good fight and won, (fingers crossed), I thought it was time to remind you all that Gid-fest 2010 is fast approaching.
Details can be found at the Facebook page;
But basically put for those of you that don't frequest Facebook, it will be held between 12pm and 8pm on Saturday the 14th of August at the Victoria Pub in Bayswater.
As with previous years there will be fun (probably), games (definitely), and prizes, (if I remember to buy them), through-out the day. The only requirement is for attendees to bring a gift-wrapped CD of their favourite studio album released between January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2009. This is for the Lucky Dip that will be held around 2pm.
So if you can make it and are on Facebook, please update the event so we have an idea of numbers. If you're not on Facebook but still intend to be there, please let me know via the message board. To paraphrase Roy Scheider, we may well need a bigger boat.
[mutters to himslef]: Eat something. No chasers. Eat something. No chasers...
Aus - You and I both know that it would take a better man than I, or in fact anyone who turns up at Gid-fest, to prevent you from drinking like a fish. Hell, we've come to expect it!
By the way folks, I've now had to book both rooms at the Victoria Pub to make sure we've enough room to accommodate us all, if the confirmed numbers happen to all turn up at once. Not sure how it's all going to pan out on the day but I do like a challenge.
I'm working hard on getting Mrs Fist to make an appearance.
I've now had to book both rooms at the Victoria PubΒ
Is that the library on the other side of the landing that looks like a Victorian gentleman's club? Awesome, we can retire there for brandy and cigars after Lee's pop quiz. I'll bring my smoking jacket.
I'll bring a billiard cue and an east-end floozy.
14th August I can't do......got a friend visiting from dahn sarf to have a mad rush around Fringe shows. That's mildly annoying.

I'm in and so is my wife.
ditto - see post 38.
I can confirm that my missus will not be making an appearance.
I don't know whether I should be really pleased or really worried about the prospective numbers of attendees. Could be crowded this year!
Lee - last year about 50% of confirmed attendees actually made a showing, so if you work on that ratio this year, you can't go wrong.
I'm going through the wringer, trying to pick a CD. This is hell.

Easy choice for me, I think. But then there's that other one. Hmmm.
It's like being torn between puddings on a menu at a good restaurant, isn't it?
Which ever you go for, you know you'll slightly regret your choice when it arrives. I think you've just got to stop thinking about it and blindly plump for one... then regret it.
Like spouses, then.
Except mine, I hasten to add.
Did someone say pudding? I'm more a riley-ite than a gidhead, as some of you know, but witchy is gwanning me about this. well, kind of.....

Can't have a fest without pudding.
Gwan! I'd go too, like, but I've already spent a Saturday in Village for 6Music this year - unlikely to get a day-pass for another.
