Can we make our suggestions on the messageboard for the Gideon Coe Australia Day Special?
I've never thought much of Australian music but I hope I can be proved wrong by the quality of this show. Any country that can't stop Jet and Wolfmother at source must ask serious questions of itself.
In any case, I'm going to ask for something by The Seekers.
Thanks Tommy. I meant to do this earlier. Please leave suggestions here.

Midnight Oil were good. Their protest songs about Aboriginal land rights and environmental destruction can stand up and be counted - all 6 albums. Lead singer Pete Garrett turned to politics and became Minister for Environment and Arts at the 2004 election under Kevin Rudd. (Wonder if he was at Copenhagen - Australia are the 2nd worst polluter per capita). Play "Beds Are Burning" or "Power And The Passion".
"Dead Can Dance" are surely the obvious choice, but the tunes are quite long.
"Fortune Presents Gifts Not According to the Book", and "The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove" are both 6 minutes long, but "How Fortunate the Man With None" (words by Brecht) (truly DCD are the new Kurt Weill!)is over 9 minutes!
How about something off the first LP, e.g. "The Fatal Impact" (just over 3 minutes)?
for a beautiful, short and different track: Dead Can Dance's "Ariadne". I wish it was three times as long.
(I have just remembered you can play compact discs on modern computers, using the cupholder/CD drive)
How about something by The Birthday Party from their JP session? Otherwise, Rolf Harris's version of Stairway to Heaven (the only version I can tolerate) or, if allowable, Charlie Drake's "My boomerang won't come back".
For once, I'll go along with Cyril, and suggest Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning. I first stumbled upon this via a 'dodgy' video tape that an Aussie gap year boy had brought with him to remind him of home - he was a very, very fine young man!
I think the Australian influence on punk/garage should be acknowledged. In many cases it was better than the UK/US music that influenced it.
For example:-
The Lime Spiders
Hoodoo Gurus
The Stems
Screaming Tribesmen
The Hitmen
Sunnyboys
New Christs - and last but not least -
Radio Birdman
How about AC/DC Bon Scott period and check out the singer they had befor Bon
The best dance tune out of Australia and one of the best anywhere. Itchy & Scratchy's 'Sweetness and Light'
Please play it.
On the rock side I'll agree with other comment re Radio Birdman and Hoodoo Gurus.
How about "Advance Australia Fair" sung by an opera singer from the start and finish straight at Melbourne? A sure sign that the spring is arriving! (though it won't be the first race this year!)
Don't forget The Church but please not the obvious one (Under The Milky Way). All their albums since 1998 have been excellent up to and including last year's Untitled#23.
The Go-betweens should also be in there.
Back in 1999 I worked in Sydney and bought an excellent album, Grand Slam by Spiderbait. Not sure if they are still going but a great band.
oh, can't wait for this special - here's a few to consider...
1. You Am I - Berlin Chair.
Best australian band of the past 10-15 years, always fantastic live, this is from their debut, and a classic
2. The Triffids - something off Born Sandy Devotional, The Seabirds or Lonely Stretch maybe
3. the Go-Betweens definitely - Bye Bye Pride, Spring Rain, Right Here, House Jack Kerouac Built - too many to choose from, so so good!!
4. The Hummingbirds - great early 90s power pop, made 2 classic albums, Blush was a hit in bout 1989 and still sounds great
5. Smudge - Don't Want To Be Grant McLennan - Evan dando's lemonheads co-writer from the 90s, awesome indie pop
6. GRAND SALVO - last but not least, brilliant songwriter from Melbourne released a beautiful album Soil Creatures this year, Needles and Road are gorgeous!
ah, better stop there, could go on and on and on, can't wait to hear the show!
Don't know much Australian music so looking forward to this show. Anything by the Avalanches would do nicely though, also The Bamboo's cover of King Of The Rodeo is far superior to the kings of leon original.
I'm going to keep harping on about 'Round the Twist' right up until Australia Day. After that, I'm going to go live in a lighthouse.
There's that lovely song "Bapa" by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.

Hi Gideon
"Setting Sun" by Howling Bells was one of the first songs I noted down when I first discovered 6music - and I think they did a Hub Session on your morning show around that time - so any track of your choice would be lovely!

I'd suggest something by The Dirty Three. "Ever Since" or anything else off Cinder.
Come to think about it, how about an instrumental special at some time in the future?
You say Australia - I think Kangaroo
"Kanga-Roo" by Jeff Buckley and
"Kangaroo Heart" by Archie Bronson Outfit will be
Rolf's Court Of King Caratacus would be a great way to get proceedings underway I feel.
Spiderbait are unknown here, but are quite fantastic. Anything off the "Grand Slam" or "Ivy and the Big Apples" albums would be great.
Also recommend "Sun Arise" by Sir Rolf. This is a genuinely revolutionary track and it is much to our grandparents credit that they made this a hit.
Please avoid INXS. On grounds of taste.
The Sugargliders - Letter from a Lifeboat
Utterly beautiful......
Never thought much of Australian Music!! You obviously haven't been to our country and listened to Triple J, the best radio station on this planet! Maybe you should tune in on Aus day they count down the top 100 songs of the year.
The Panics
Nick Cave
Augie March
Temper Trap
Wolfmother
Powderfinger
John Butler Trio
The Waifs
Something for Kate
You Am I
Hilltop Hoods
The Vines
Empire of the Sun
The Sleepy Jackson
The Avalanches
Angus and Julia Stone
Oh, the Sleepy Jackson, there was a classic from Mark and Lard's Biggest Show.
Still having trouble seeing past 'Round the Twist'...
Triple J, you say? Jet, Jackson (Sleepy) and erm, Georgy Girl.
What kind of gulls are there in Australia?

Has anyone mentioned The Whitlams yet? or The Triffids? Things of Stone & Wood were ok in their time & what about Pendulum to get things swinging (no pun intended)?
Friendly are a great band... "My mother was deejay", "some kind of love song" "I wana B U" or "I love you but if you treat me like ... you can just ... off" is a great tune... although probably not censor friendly...
The Avalanches and Pendulum are brilliant too, and The Stems...
Big Love

Gid, I've always thought The Living End are a very underrated Aussie band over here, with some awesome songs. The energy of Punk mixed with catchy Pop melodies and a bit of Rockabilly and Reggae thrown in. And you can't argue with a double-bass! How about title track from Roll On Australia or Standing in the Light.
Other Top Oz bands:
Midnight Oil: anything from Scream in Blue (Live Album)
Men at Work: Overkill or Maria
Ah the Whitlams are magic.
Sleepy Jackson - Good Dancers is the tune:
The Grates
The Presets
Tame Impala. Awesome.

I am amazed that The Cat Empire has been overlooked, a real raucous live act and smashing songs. Hello is good as is Sly. Please let these Melbourne cats out of the bag!!

There's a version of the ma-na-ma-na song from the Muppets which I think is by Spiderbait.
Otherwise, Saints, Radio Birdman, Eastern Dark, Scientists and so on. There are a number of good compilations of stuff available.
Oh, and the Birthday Party. Don't think they came to much.
How about some Colin Hay... "Waiting for my real life to begin" is a good one.
I'm not pop fanatic, but I'm a bit partial to some Frente and Angie Hart's later incarnation, Splendid (although they're 50% American...).

Celibate Rifles - Darlinghurst Confidential

couple of new(ish) artists worth checking out The Basics/Gotye + Megan Washington (her song "Cement" is great, but would require a loud cough from Gideon to get it on air. also Guy Garvey plays a Augie March from time to time....very good!
Can I suggest the XL Capris - 'My City of Sydney' from 1979 which I think may be the last time I heard it (oh ok until checking details on a certain video website last night).
Eric Bogle's 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilida' would also be great to hear expressing, as it does, the futility of war.
Holly Throsby and Bonny 'Prince' Billy - Would You? is a great recent song, but may not be eligible.
Is Kylie allowed?; perhaps if she is teamed up with Mr C, who will preseumably feature, perhaps with Mr E on his film sountracks for a change.
Looking forwards to hearing the Saints and please, whatever happens, however much the tempatation of irony - no Rolf Harris.
Spooky - typed the above missive whilst listening to Monday's programme - just as I pressed send Mr C & Mr E latest work started echoing round the kitchen - good job the sun is shining and birds are singing....
I don't think anybody has mentioned The Lucksmiths, who were rather wonderful but sadly "called it a day" last year. 'T-shirt Weather' would possibly be the most appropriate track to play after the UK's recent cold spell.
Anything by SIA would be lovely, especially off her first album,'Healing is difficult' she's a lovely lady, met her in a cookie shop in Williamsberg, Brooklyn & at a CSS gig, please play her!!
I drink to get drunk or Fear, the latter if possible
Thank
xxxxxxx
Please play SIA, she's awesome, either FEAR from her first album 'Healing is Difficult' or I drink To Get Drunk from the same album.
Thank you
xxxxxx
Anything from the Robert Forster Album in particular the title track - Demon Days

If I were to suggest one track, then 'Travis Bickle' by the Scientists is an absolutely ace tune - although it's going back a while.
I seem to remember liking a band called the Celibate Rifles, too.
Obviously, you are going to have to play some AC/DC, but some newer Oz bands such as Howling Bells are pretty good, I reckon.
Cheers Cobber
And say hello to my brother Dom and his Aussie Missus Zoe in Sydney for me please Gideon!

Personally I can't figure out why ABC and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ can't get together so they can just broadcast the Top 100, given the amount of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ stuff that's sold through the ABC shop!
Anyway, rant over, my Aussie other half wants:
Powderfinger - These Days
Augie March - 1 Crowded Hour
Something for Kate - Deja vu
Depending on timezones it looks like we're going to end up flicking between the 6music and triple J web players!
Jimmy Barnes / Cold Chisel
Hunters and Collectors - throw your arms around me
Crowded House
Powderfinger
Spiderbait
Reguritator
Killing Heidi
I completely agree considering the Triple J countdwon is the biggest o fit's kind in the world, go figure! Anyway, the number 1 leaked last friday, whoops!!

Warumpi Band - preferably Fitzroy Crossing, but anything off Big Name No Blankets.
Bet you can't find that between now and the start of the show...
Talk about Gideon's show and Freak Zone on the 6 Music Message boards.
