HONEST ...Slits play to 2000 Beer leery Yorkshire men on a Saturday night

  TRUE 鈥�.. The Cribs played a 鈥渉ome coming鈥� gig at Doncaster dome last Saturday 鈥�. Chief support were the Slits, and for 鈥渉ome coming鈥� read 90% of 2,000 audience having NEVER heard of the Slits, and probably not even been to a gig since last 鈥淜aiser Chiefs鈥� homecoming gig 鈥�. The Slits hit the stage at about 9:30 pm 鈥�..and Needless to say the Typical Grlls went down like a lead balloon 鈥�. Other than wearing Lancashire Cricket Club gear, I cannot think of what they could have done to further antagonise the 鈥渕osh鈥� 鈥�.. after much beer pelting, booing, effing and jeffing between band and 鈥渕osh鈥�, they departed only for Ari to come back for a solo "bare back side" moon encore 鈥�.
  The Cribs came on around 10pm, and proceeded to pronounce the crowd as 鈥渘ot real鈥� Cribs fans, and lamenting their levitation into mainstream 鈥�..
  What surprised me, is that the Cribs could have expected the Slits to have gone down any other way with 2000 Beer leery Yorkshire men !!!!!
  And that鈥檚 why online gig鈥檚 are NEVER going to be on my radar - LOFL

  That's a frustrating tale to say the least. However, I think there's quite a history for this sort of treatment for support bands.
  
  I think the Clash had to berate fans for being less than respectful to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. And they themselves had to struggle to keep the Who fans quiet on the enormodome tour if that Shea Stadium show is anything to go by.
  
  More recently CSS had to deal with a fair amount of banter when sharing the bill with Kasabian. At one point a near full can of beer was launched onto the stage, caught by Lovefoxxx, downed by her, then sent back. So the story goes.
  
  My feeling is if you are in there for the support band the best thing to do is belt up, show them respect and listen to them. Or wait in the bar.
  
  Apologies I sound like a hectoring uncle in that last paragraph. I don't have an Uncle Hector.

  This sort of thing would never happen in West Yorkshire.
  
  Right about retreating to the bar when you're not interested in the bar, problems arise in small venues when the bar's too near the stage, or the room has been cleverly designed so that any noise made at the bar gets amplified back towards the stage *cough, cough, Shepherds Bush empire... cough*

  "when you're not interested in the BAND", that should be. Who's not interested in the bar?

  Indeed ...the Cribs quoted the crowd hostilty when they were the support on the last Sex Pistols tour ....

  Right through my first gig-going days, it's always astonished me how people would buy-often at great expense-tickets for a gig and deliberately miss the support acts. This would be often on the grounds that "I've never heard of them", completely ignoring the fact that, once-upon-a-time, their adored headliners were once unknowns. A couple of years ago I went to see Muse at the Sheffield Arena, and very much enjoyed the Noisettes-at least a quarter of the audience preferred to queue for over-priced hotdogs rather than to catch a terific band!
