Have their been any artists who have been stacks better commercialy or artistically pursuing a solo career after leaving an incredibly influential band? Can't see it with:
Joe Strummer after The Clash
Ian Brown after The Stone Roses
Richard Ashcroft after The Verve
Roger Waters after Pink Floyd
Any of the Beatles
Jimmy Page after Led Zeppelin
David Byrne after Talking Heads
Lou Reed after Velvet Underground
Bit of a nerdy question, probably been done to death but couldn't find it anywhere!
Commercially? Michael Jackson? Peter Gabriel?
The first person to say Sting gets a hard stare.
Dirty look for Rod Stewart?

Great singer-songwriters like Roddy Frame, Mike Scott, Tim Booth - all did better in their original bands (and many went back after realising it)
