Hello,
As I write this I am preparing for a 3 hour stint on the bric-a-brac stall at the local school fare. How am I supposed to know how much to charge for a second hand toy cash resgister?
Call it 20p.
To other business, we will start playing some records of a festive bent on the show quite soon. So, which ones would you like to hear.
I fully intend to feature the Waitresses, James Brown, Low, some Reverend Horton Heat, The Crystals, Gaudete and Burt Janch. And Jonah Lewie. But it can't all be entrusted to me. I speak as someone who played the full version (with intro coversation) of Bing and Bowies Peace on Earth/Litte Drummer Boy 3 times in a row this morning.
So please leave some suggestions here and, as ever, I'll see what I can do.
x
"Alan Parsons in a Winter Wonderland" - Grandaddy.
"Feliz Navi-Nada" - El Vez.
Which reminds me, I'd better get the cassette out for the upcoming drive home!
Re: cash register. You could always go for dual pricing - say 100 Bank of Toyland Pounds (forgot that's the currency we already have )
Half Man Half Biscuit - Its cliched to be cynical at Christmas
The Fall - (We wish you) A Protein Christmas
Get Behind Thee Santa - Sufjan Stevens
Hey Parker, It's Christmas - Ryan Adams

Reckon Sufjan Stevens has got this christmas thing pretty much wrapped up... Bum bum.
Else Yo La Tengo do what it says on the tin, with 'It's Christmas Time'.
r.e.m. doing the charlie brown xmas theme, or "ghost reindeer in the sky"
Hem did a xmas song a year or so back. Grant Lee Philips has just 'released' a download one.
Simon and the bald one - Silent Night
Mark Kozelek did white xmas
Buffalo Tom - Mineral mentions xmas, so that counts.
Ben Folds 5 - Brick, although that is the perfect between xmas and new year lull record.
I'll be up in scotland (without my baby python), so anything by the Wild Swans would fit my plans.
Laurence
The Fall - ''No Xmas for John Quays''
Well, it was only a matter of time...
I like that paloma faith one.- "It's Christmas and I hate You".
It's available out there in download land somewhere.
I'm sure this isn't just true for me: the records that most evoke Chritsmas aren't the yule-themed ones. Hunky Dory is THE Xmas album for me. Kid A is christmassy.
Chrissmass well-er well-er Chrissmass, that was my Les Gray impression.
I'd like to hear
Gift X-change - Calexico
Christmas Time Blues - The Trainwreck Riders
(well it's not all mulled wine and pictionary for everyone you know.
Joy To The World - Aretha Franklin
Xmas Bubblegum Machine - Sultans Of Ping
and I'd agree with a previous poster who highlighted the Christmas stylings of Sufjan Stevens, specifically for me Come On Let's Boogie To The Elf Dance, and The Friendly Beasts.

Jesus Christ-Family Cat
Sexy Christmas Baby Mine-Morphine
Backdoor Santa- Clarence Carter or Cud (Not Jet's version)
I want an alien for christmas- Fountains of Wayne
If you have the time, I think a bit of country-esque, bitter-sweet acoustic whist would be well received by the listening several, so how about "Christmas in Prison" by John Prine?
If you can't find John Prine's version, there's always Emmy the Great with Lightspeed Champion's version from the great "It's Not Like Christmas" compilation Shelter CD that came out a few years back. In fact most of that CD would be a fitting addition to the show I reckon.
Another one here for
Fountains of Wayne's I Want An Alien for Christmas
and
The Wedding Present - Holly Jolly Hollywood
Mogwai - Christmas Song
Eels - Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas
The Hussy's - Snowboard
Belle & Sebastian - I Took Some Time for Christmas (was this just a Peel Session?)

My Latest Novel did a Christmas song for a Bella Union minidisc, 'Outside It's Christmas' it's called, I can't think many people know or care, but it's as wonderful as expected.

Cash register: slip a tenner in, and THEN sell it for 20p - that's what Gordon Brown would do, give the banks billions and then let them keep it so long as their bonuses are taxed a bit.
Chrimbo records: I like that St Etienne one.
Jesus Christ-Family CatΒ
I don't know this, but I want to! Play it, please!
Get these two in for a special Xmas session

Thats scary!!! She looks like Tracey Emin wearing granny glasses with a mullet hairdo - you live in a weird, weird world Fist.
Two you really can't do without
OK, I'm not big and I'm not clever
"Live" would be over-egging it.
I exist. In a waking nightmare of self-recrimination and gnawing regret. I fear death only for this: not that I may cease to exist, but that there may be another life to come - exactly like this one.
Merry Xmas all. Off-licences are open for another 90 minutes.
How about the new Camera Obscura cover of Jim Reeves 'The Blizzard'
Nice one on that Cherry Ade link.
My money well spent !
I propose: Low "Just Like Christmas".
Oh and Henry Rollins "Night before Christmas"
Low "Just like Christmas" is a perfect Xmas track. It's gentle; it reeks of nostalgia; the very title expresses the gulf between idealised hope and reality that IS the Xmas experience; and it's beautiful.
You don't hear a lot of Low on the radio, but I rate them.
Tolhurst, Alex, Fist - looks like you all have the 'It's A Cool, Cool Christmas' CD, which is an excellent compilation. I had 'Alan Parsons In A Winter Wonderland' in my head when I heard that their lyricist, Eric Woolfson, had died.
I don't have it! But I'm off to check it out.
Cheers
Bob Rivers' White Trash Christmas" resonates well down here in rural Sussex, with its references to cousins kissin' and front teeth missin'. However, there is a word in the song which would probably disqualify it from inclusion.
How about Leon Redbone and Dr John's version of "Frosty the Snowman"? I'm not 100% sure but I think this song is devoid of both profanity and suggestions of incest.
Thank goodness I can post again. Not that I have anythnig to add at the moment. Do carry on.

Thanks for the My Latest Novel tune, Gideon.
I'd go as far as saying that you are the top My Latest Novel playing DJ in the world, having fought of competition from Vic Galloway of Radio Scotland and John Richards of KEXP Seattle.

There's another a cappella Steeleye Span song called "The King". This song was traditionally sung on twelfth night by a group of people who would kill a wren, dress it in ribbons, then hawk it from door to door asking folk to pay to see "The King" (The Wren, apparently, was thought to be the king of birds). So, here's a song for twelfth night and a damn fine one it is. If you have an electrified folk-shaped hole in your record collection, you could do a lot worse than fill it with "Please to see the king" or the compilation "The lark in the morning - the early years" (don't know if this is still available - it's the first three albums stuck together and they contain some joyous music).
P.S. If anyone brings a glammed-up dead wren to your door, please don't encourage them by giving them money.

whatever you do, don't give Simon Cowell ideas!
Is it possible to download a dead badger with a tinfoil hat as an alternative?

I'd love to suggest some things to Simon Cowell but I daren't mention any of them here.
Are you suggesting a talent show involving bizarrely-attired dead animals? If the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will commission "Butcher of the year", then why not "Taxidermist of the year"? George Lamb could present that as well, and maybe take part in some way. Perhaps it could be called "The right stuff", or "Ex factor"
this just in...
r.e.m. doing 'santa baby'. well, not the whole band, just Mills, but billed as the band.

Laurencea, I hope the REM version of Santa Baby is a lot better than Madonna's, where she sounds to be imitating Little Jimmy Osmond!

If Gid's going to play 'Gaudete' over the festive period , what about Steeleye Spans other Christmas track, 'The Boars Head Carol'? I can only think of one occasion when I've heard that on the radio. Another one to consider, 'Santa Clause Is Coming On A Boogie Woogie Train' (or summat very similar) By The Tractors. How about it Gid?
