Hello
Here's the plan. When the people of Troy are asleep we leave a great big Wooden Horse outside the gates and... apologies wrong plan.
No, please. Here it is.
Weds the 16th Dec - Short record night
Thursday 17th Dec - Long record night
So, as usual there will be sessions and concerts but besides that every record will be either about 2mins or under (sometimes well under) or 6mins and over (sometimes well over).
So far we have some excellent suggestions but please leave some more here for either night. All I know is we will kick off with Hello There (live) by Cheap Trick and plan Dexy's Tell Me What's She Like at some point over the two nights. And play some Minutemen on the Weds
The rest is up to you really...
Thanks as ever
Gidx
Probably slightly obvious a selection, but Led Zep's Kashmir comes in at over eight minutes.
I once heard Fi Glover play the whole thing on Five Live of all places...
Andrew in 麻豆约拍 Red Button Towers
Thanks Andrew. What may seem obvious choices are as welcome as any other suggestions. Though as yet no-one has suggested the full version of Bat Out of Hell.
Fi played Kashmir... really? She used to play the records when we did breakfast together in about 1856.
Anyway, more please.
Long (ish) record - John Cooper Clarke's "Beasley Street" - 6.44
Short (right on the limit) - Banshee's version of "20th Century Boy" - 2.00
Okay, shorties:
Byrds - Old John Robertson (1.50)
Bonzo Dog Band - Cool Britannia (0.39)
Syd Barrett - Golden Hair (1.56)
Tom Waits - Johnsburg, Illionois (1.33)
Jefferson Airplane - Embryonic Journey (1.53)
Eddie Cochran - Cut Across Shorty (1.49)
Half Man Half Biscuit - Running Order Squabble Fest(1.54)
Supergrass - Coffee In The Pot (1.49)
They Might Be Giants - Particle Man (1.59)
Billy Bragg - Ingrid Bergman (1.50)
Elvis Costello - Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used To Do) (1.39)
Longies:
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Heard It Through The Grapevine (11.02)
Gruff Rhys - Skylon! (14.36)
Fairport Convention - Sloth (9.15)
Miles Davis - So What (9.25)
Neu - Hallo Gallo (10.07)
Lou Reed - Street Hassle (11.00)
Yo La Tengo - Pass The Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind (10.47)
By the way, I'll see your Bat Out Of Hell and raise you Stargazer by Rainbow (8.28)
A few more:
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well (9.02)
Wedding Present - Interstate 5 (8.06)
French, Frith, Kaiser & Thompson - Killing Jar (7.44)
Led Zeppelin - In My Time Of Dying (11.06)
Wilco - Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Though the last one is to all intents and purposes the same as Hallo Gallo...

Neil Young's 'No Hidden Path' (14:30)
Television's 'Marquee Moon' (anything from 11 mins to 12 days depending on which version.)
Richard Hawley's (Yes I do see the point) 'Don't You Cry' (10:40)
Patti Smith's 'Land' (9:30)
I'm thinking Trees: "Sally Free and Easy" (10.18), or their lovely version of "She Moved Through The Fair" (8.07).
Cyril must have some long Talk Talk tracks to recommend? Cyril? Someone poke him.

Won鈥檛 there be a work imbalance over the two nights? Sweating yourself in a frenzy of flying vinyl on night one. Feet up with a cream cake and a cup of tea on the next. Anyway...
Short 鈥
Gotta have The Clash, I suppose 鈥 1977?
And the Buzzcocks 鈥 Oh Sh...!
Iggy Pop鈥檚 Jacket 鈥 Those Naughty Lumps
Duckworth Lewis Method 鈥 Rain Stops Play
Wheels (Pt 1) 鈥 Hammell on Trial 鈥 57secs
A bit of Crass? Do They Owe Us A living?
Bus Driver鈥檚 Prayer - Ian Dury
Uncorrected Personality Traits 鈥 Robyn Hitchcock
My Funny Valentine 鈥 Elvis Costello
Anything of that Sh.. Music EP that Peely used to play.
Long 鈥
Bright Tomorrow 鈥 f Buttons (7:41) - trying to keep that short really as all the other tracks are longer, I think
50 Year Old Man - The Fall (over 11 mins)
Rooster Blues - Seasick Steve (Over 10 minutes)
Another One Bites the Dust 12鈥 鈥 Clint Eastwood & General Saint (or any Greensleeves 12")
Sing Sing Sing 鈥 Benny Goodman (depends on the version, but generally around 8 mins)
...and obviously
Anything from The Drift, pretty much...
Try Clara at 12:43 and kill two birds with the one stone!
There鈥檚 an alternate version of Fairport鈥檚 鈥楢 Sailor鈥檚 Life鈥 (11.26) on the Richard Thompson anthology 鈥榃atching The Dark鈥 where at 6.30 Mr Thompson goes into a free form solo you鈥檇 swear Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd had listened closely to. Were it not for the fact the track lay in the vaults until a decade or so ago.
Another good long one:
Decemberists 鈥 The Island, Come And See, The Landlord鈥檚 Daughter, You鈥檒l Not Fear The Drowning鈥 (it鈥檚 listed as one track, at 12.26).
Wot? No Deadheads 鈥 surely there must be a version of Dark Star that could fill the entire show.
Hendrix - "Hear My Train A Comin" (11.15)
Neu! - "Fur Immer" - over 10 minutes.
And Phantom Band - 'Crocodile' - clocks in at over 7 mins and is quite sublime.

Under 2 mins:
- Brakes - 'Comma Comma Full Stop', Or 'The Most Fun' off Give Blood
- Presidentsof the united states - 'We're not going to make it'
Over 6:
- Sufjan Stevens - 'Come on feel the Illnoise' (Off album of same name)
- Explosions in the Sky - 'The Birth and Death of the day' off All of a sudden I miss everyone
- Radiohead - 'Paranoid Android' off OK Computer
- Windowlicker - Aphex Twin
I was right - all but one track on Spirit of Eden is over 6 minutes, and there are three long ones on Colour of Spring.
Not "April 5th", though, which is Cyril's favourite, if I remember right. 9 seconds too short. Sorry Cyril.

I'd tried to forget Bat Out of Hell ever existed...
There's an Extreme Noise Terror track that I heard once on John Peel's show that comes in at 45 seconds and for the life of me I can't remember what it's called. But I'm sure someone could just take any random Extreme Noise Terror album and find at least one track that's about that length

'Bat Out Of Hell' is Todd Rundgren's finest hour.
For the longest song can we have 'You Suffer' slowed down to last 9 minutes? Thanks.

Shithausen! - Euros Childs (0:45). Will fit in before any news bulletin. Can't believe no-one's nominated it.
I didn't really have Talk Talk down as a long songs band, Fist, on Laughing Stock there may only be 6 tracks but it's quite a short walbum.
Neu! - "Fur Immer" - over 10 minutes.聽
so who can explain why the "Gedenkminute f脙录r A+K" (a minute's silence for A+K) is
1) not silent
2) 2 minutes and 7 seconds long?
Otherwise it fits the bill admirably.
And who are A+K? I've forgotten, unfortunately.
For the under 2 minutes songs you could go to the 麻豆约拍 in Manchester and find the list of 'Two Minute Hero' tunes that Marc Riley must have in a cupboard somewhere - or probably not as his memory is very good so he'd have just remembered them all.
Short:
McCarthy's 'I Am A Wallet', contained 14 tracks, nothing above 3:06 and the following sub 2 minute tracks:
Monetaries 1.55
Antinature 1.41
Charles Windsor 1.37
God Made The Virus 1.42
The Funeral 1.50
A Child Soon In Chains 1.45
In The Dark Times 1.43
I'd recommend Monetaries, Chas Windsor and The Funeral out of that little lot.
There's barely a thread goes by where I can't crowbar in a Field Mice tune and this is no exception - 'An Earlier Autumn' clocks in right on the magic 2 minute mark.
I assume The Smiths Please Please Please has had plenty of suggestrions already......
As for the long stuff:
Lush:
Never Never 8.04 - a track that frequently has me close to tears and I don't know why......
Desire Lines 7.37
The Blue Nile:
3 tunes on the first 2 albums come in at 6.26 strangely enough:
Heatwave, Saturday Night and The Downtown Lights.
Headlights On The Parade is 6.11 and, sadly, From Rags To Riches just falls outside at 5.59
There's also my pet tune, Missing The Moon at 7 minutes, from the errmmmm.... Field Mice

Short - WIRE - FIELD DAYS FOR THE SUNDAYS 28"
Long - GENESIS - SUPPERS READY 23'06"
I DARE YOU GID!

Shorts...
There's a compilation called "short music for short people" (fat wreck chords) which has 101 30-second songs on one cd.....
NOFX - Monosyllabic Girl
The Misfits are quite good for short things.
Napalm Death (again)
Lots of indiepop sort of stuff at around the 2 minute mark.
ZZ Top - Tush
Long......
Marillion - Grendel
Meat Loaf - Paradise by the dashboard light
Guns'n'Roses - November Rain (on second thoughts, don't bother..)
early Genesis
Most of Led Zeppelin (especially live tracks)
Mogwai Fear Satan (16 minutes!)

Short -
Husker Du - Never Talking to You Again
Wire - Fragile
The Clash - Protex Blue
Short 鈥 The Radiators from Space - Television Screen
1:51
Love this!
My fave long track of the moment at 17:42 is Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree (I know I know, I'll grow out of it)

Weirdly, I was playing that Porcupine Tree track last night. Acquired Fear of a Blank Planet for a quid (yes a quid) from a ex-library stock sale on Saturday.
God bless Leicestershire libraries!
That doesn't bode well for them making a huge breakthrough in Leics then! Good track though, brilliant for driving to. Glad I'm not the only one listening to them, I was beginning to feel the hood of my anorak slowly fall over my face.

There were some great 12" singles in the early 80s that were very long - how about Robert Gorl (of DAF) with Darling Don't Leave Me - 6 mins 49 secs. Annie Lennox did vocals on it but it's really good honest. Got it in my local suburban record shop in the 50p sale rack because nobody wanted it.

And a disco classic - Shame by Evelyn Champagne King 6 mins 33 secs. Got to be better than Suppers Ready by Genesis surely. Sorry, can't do prog and the tedious length of the tracks is part of the reason.
Can't do prog?
I could convert you.

How can you not groove to this, sister?

Nope - doesn't work for me. I quite like Utopia though but that's Todd and he is a genius. When Freakzone plays prog there is a huge competition to switch it off first in our house. They are not very friendly on their message board either. Asked a question about The Bevis Frond and they totally ignored me. Won't go back there soon - tweedy nerds.
You're right - that was obviously jazz-prog noodling. Verging on the criminal
How about this:

Anyone mind if I weigh in on this?
Too late.
Sister - did you ever get this? Should wind up Fist no end. It's the nearest disco ever came to prog. Gets going around 4"30'.
Chances of it getting played on long record night? Nil.
short:
guided by voices - shocker in gloomtown
times new viking - drop out
health - girl attorney
deerhoof - holy night fever
shellac - copper
long:
slint - good morning, captain
karate - sing
shellac - the end of radio
tortoise - djed
do make say think - ontario plates
